On a damn hot Saturday night, flying somewhere in between everybodies recovery from a horrendous Christmas hangover and the over-excitement of what was to be a massive New Years Eve, Chapel Street’s Revolver Nightclub came alive with a visit from the UKs Soul Of Man.

For the second year running, Fingerlickin Records’ main men Justin Rushmore and Jem Panufnik took to the stage at one of Melbourne’s most respected breakbeat nights called ‘The Late Show’. With main room support from locals like Ransom and Lynt and DJs in the backroom such as Paris, Khalil and Jnett the night left us with yet more proof that Melbourne’s breaks talent is on par with the best from around the world.

Soul Of Man kicked off with some of the newer Fingerlickin’ tunes and breaks that fall more along the progressive and housey breaks lines than some of the tougher nu skool tunes we’ve been hearing round town lately. Over some two hours the pair had the packed venue grooving along to a mixed bag of breakbeat treats. A lot different to the vibe they created at the 2002 show, but great nonetheless – especially if you’re out there trying to hear something a little bit different in your breaks. Lynt finished off the night with a few hours of superb mixing and music that ranged from funky and dirty bass-driven breaks to a few classics that had the entire venue jumping. Out in the backroom the DJs flexed their diverse breakin muscles with lots of funk, groove and old hip-hop breaks, with Paris definitely being the standout DJ for me on the night – loved your work!

Despite some lack of space to move and the too hot to handle temperature, it was a top night from start to finish – and it’s great to see that The Late Show is still standing as a top quality night when there’s so many newer nights and new ideals coming into the realm of Melbourne breakbeat. The front and back rooms were jumping all the way til sunrise and I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll be treated to this very special UK breakin’ duo at Revolver again at the end of 2003.
