Oxford Street was absolute chaos as it was Mardi Gras weekend, so I manoeuvred my way, slowly but surely to the entrance at Tantra, where after a short wait, was able to enter. I was only halfway up the stairs when I noticed the heat was definately hotter than usual, with the stairs scattered with sweaty bodies craving fresh air.
Maybe it will be cooler upstairs, I thought to myself, but this wasn’t to be the case. The moment I reached the top of the stairs, it felt as if the temperature had risen 10 degrees and it took a minute to register that there was no lighting, and the main area, which is normally in full motion was empty, with the exception of a few people sitting around looking anxious. Even the DJ booth was empty. There was music was playing, although at a very low volume.
I was quite puzzled as to what was happening, so I followed the sound to find Sample G behind the decks, that were temporarily set up towards the back, thanks to my friend, Becko, who assisted in making it operational. A blown fuse was the culprit, and as the air-conditioning was not functioning, the heat became more intense, but this did not deter a single soul. The majority of the crowd were still dancing and everyone was still in good spirits. Determined not put a damper on the situation, Scott Baker was next up and hyped up the crowd by dishing out some classic tracks.
At about 2am, the power was finally back on, the lighting and sound was back to normal and the air-conditioning was kicking in. You could see the excitement. People were rushing frantically to the front where Karma rewarded the dedicated Plastic fans with an uplifting set. More and more people were now bouncing along and the time Nervous commenced his set, the place was jamming.
Now everyone was in a trance, enjoying the sharp, luscious sounds and you could see the emotion on every single face.
It was quite a rush to see all these punters sticking it out until the end. And really, the performances and attitudes from the DJ’s on the night gave everyone good reason to stay. There was a friendly vibe circulating all night, and I found myself engaging in some fascinating conversations and I was pleased to hear one of my favourite tracks ‘The Theme’ by Jurgen Vries.
In addition to this, I would like to make a special mention to
Scott (chairman of the cloakroom), who always gives A Class service with a smile. Fantastic work Scott! Not only does he do his job well but he seems to motivate everyone unknowingly.
The enthusiastic bunch of followers were totally satisfied in the end, and it was inspirational experience all round.
