After taking a well-earned break from the promotion scene, the Synapse crew returned for the next instalment of the hugely acclaimed Dubplate night. So it was, once again, to Mombasa I trekked for another night of maniacal Junglistic mayhem and dark ‘n’ dirty Drum ‘n’ Bass bedlam!
The summer weather seems to have knocked some sense into people, as the size of the crowd was quite decent, combining the usual mix of jungle/DnB fans with your odd assortment of interstate business men and such, there to prey on single women drinking alone. It was definitely a relief to see such a crowd, considering some of the shockers last year.
The ball was set rolling at 9pm and those anticipating the Synapse EP release were not disappointed, reports indicating it was a stormer! Things began to heat up at about 10, as MGO made his long awaited return from international excursions, drawing an early crowd on the dance floor. MGO was working so hard he had to enlist the help of none other than Escha to ease the night in, while he made some pit stops at the bar.
Para stepped up at around 11 to demonstrate why he is the newest member of the crew, caning it right from the word go with a deft display of strongarm Drum n Bass tactics. It was good to see him having fun up there, as he bounced around behind the decks, obviously having as good a time as the crowd who were now getting right into it.
Midnight loomed and people were still streaming in, a pleasant surprise for Paf who was a little worried about getting no one else at 11. Soon enough it was time for Buick to show us all how its done, with the crowd tearing the floor up in response to the pressure being let loose.
This and the next few hours blurred a little bit, as I was having such a mad time, Ill do my best to explain what I remember. The mic was left open to those who dared, Anton stepped up and performed in style, others were not so tidy. Escha played some excellent oldskool material, but due to unforseen circumstances I was stuck in the car park for most of it, which was disappointing. I only managed to hear a bit of Paf’s set, as I had to leave early (that 9am class on Friday morning is a bitch). Needless to say, Paf was laying it down dark, and loud, demonstrating why he mixes it with the best during his interstate gigs.
Big ups to the Synapse crew for once again putting on a massive night of Jungle n Drum n Bass, those guys put in heaps of effort preparing for and during a gig and its great to see some of their hard work paying off again. Who knows if it was just the cold weather to blame for the bad turnouts last year? Maybe people have just come back to the scene? Either way, if Synapse keeps up the quality, things will only get better.
Until next time Drum n Bass rears its head (or anytime the beer is flowing really)...Subsonic Out.
