The coldness has started. Singlets are long gone now replaced by long sleeve shirts and warm jackets. I only noticed this as the rain began to sprinkle over me as I waited to cross the road, eager to get inside the Globe.
As I made my way around the club, the goose bumps quickly disappeared and the sight of welcoming, friendly, smiling faces set the tone for the April round of Toasted.
With Mark Walton and Ben Korbel invited to have a spin, it was always going to be a potent mix of differing music and styles but all with an emphasis on funk. Having this in mind I nestled in the warmth of the dance floor for quite a while, dancing with the regulars, watching, as Jay Walker spun some house to an already healthy dance floor. Before I new it the lifts were operating and gradually people were having a peak to see what Ben Korbel could conjure up- me included.
It didn’t take too long before he had the empty room filled with bodies, dancing to a progressive set splashed with funk. Thanks to the now familiar, solid Korbel set, I found it hard to leave the bottom level. The music was good, the mixing was tight and everyone was really friendly. In fact I think I only left once or twice. When I did I walked straight into an Ajax ‘shimmy shimmy ya’. He was half way through his solo set and it seemed a large portion crowd had decided to wait downstairs till his much anticipated duel with Mark Walton. When the time finally came around, the Toasted partygoers were not disappointed. Both guys put on a really top show, mixing a fusion of stylish hip-hop and groovy breaks-they even had the door staff dancing on chairs.
Speaking of staff, I’ve got to show some appreciation for the lift operator who was on duty for the second half of the night. He (name unknown) conversed with all on the lift, making the boring wait on the elevator, nothing short of a pleasure, cheers man.
Back to the main game: All on the floor had their designated dancing space but this was rapidly taken over by invaders (understandably) as Kid Kenobi & Proxy music’s mix of ‘La la land’ ripped through the speakers.
It was a personal highlight, along with Mark Walton’s scratching expertise, Ajax’s wacky track selection, the crowd’s laid back friendly attitude, Illya’s crowd pleasing, Ben Korbel’s set, the friendly staff, the quality of tracks, the quality residents and of course the mood of the event. The Movin’ House crew have established themselves as the perfect cocktail to kick off the new month. I wonder what their birthday bash will be like?
