After playing what many thought was the set of the night at Enchanted Forest 5 in December, Nubreed were back in Adelaide, bringing live breaks and drum n’ bass to the masses and what a performance it was!
Arriving at Black Cat White Cat to the ultra friendly door staff was a good start to the night, as I arrived DJ’s Lachlan Pender and Sammy were doing a VS set to a somewhat motionless crowd. At around 11:30 it was time for Mal Kia to step up to the decks. He delivered his usual dose of progressive however with a sprinkling of breaks. It wasn’t till around 12:30 when K2 graced the decks that the floor really started to move. K2 played what I must say was nearly a spotlight stealing set. This was an absolute blinder and by far the best breaks set I’ve witnessed from a local in Adelaide, getting the floor moving with chunky bass lines and seamless mixing, perfectly paving the way for the appearance of Nubreed.
At 1:30 the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived, the nearly capcity crowd at BCWC was waiting in anticipation as Brendon announced and welcomed the Victorian act.
Nubreed started off with a bang, playing many new unheard tunes off their upcoming album. The BCWC sound system was pumping the huge bass lines. At about the half way point of the set came what I must say is the highlight of the night as 2 out of the 3 members from Nubreed began to freestyle for 5 or so minutes. This was a marvel to hear and the crowd reaction was incredible. It was from then on I was surprised as Nubreed swapped from breaks to dnb, this got an indifferent reaction from the crowd, hyping up some, driving some from the floor. I was saddened when they finished at 2:30, disappointed not to hear their biggest hit Welcome, but still a brilliant set and a perfect example of how a live set should be done.
