Having missed Nubreed last time they played in Perth and having never been to Heat before, I was really looking forward to this night. After a little searching and consulting of maps we found the nightclub. The décor has a kind of fire temple feel with pillars, (fake?) limestone walls and (fake) flaming torches all over the place. A nice new look for Perth’s newest nightclub, I thought.

As I walked through the door Dazz K was slamming out some rolling bass lines on what I would have to say is one of the best sound systems in Perth. I decided to take a quick look around the establishment.

I was very impressed by what I saw. A large open roof, with multiple levels was a welcome change from many of the claustrophobic clubs in Perth. The central bar was well placed to serve the entire ground floor easily. The place has a comfortable and clean feel to it. The dance floor is great and the sound system is very nice, with great treble and bass. It could do with a little better mid range though. There is also a nice outdoors courtyard to chill out in. I didn’t make it upstairs but will definitely have a look next time I head over to Heat.

As Dazz K continued to keep the phat bass-lines kicking the dance floor was rapidly filling up. A pleasant surprise was seeing the members of Nubreed on the dance floor absorbing the atmosphere and chatting with punters. I had a short chat with them and found out they were planning on playing a bunch of new songs they have written for their new album. My excitement built up a bit more.

Nubreed came on and after announcing themselves and explaining their plan to do a test run with some of their new songs, let loose with the kicking bass drum and vocal “This is the beginning!” they kicked off with Midi Killa

Nubreed then played Satellites to the delight of the punters who went into a dance frenzy. As the atmospheric soundscapes unfolded over phat robotic bass lines, complimented with reverberating lyrics, a dirty bass pout appeared on the faces of everyone on the dancefloor. My only complaint was the overuse of the smoke machine made it hard to breathe and several times made it impossible to see as far as the person next to me.

Nubreed then put a shout out to all the b-boys and b-girls in the audience then changed style to start playing some DnB. Seeing as they had only played for half an hour so far I figured it was just a quick change and then we would be back into the breaks again. After Mayhem, local DJ Koosh jumped up on stage with the crew, jumping around and getting the crowd more involved.

Suddenly, with the crowd going wild, the music stopped. Then Dazz K got back behind the decks and started to play. Punters all around the dance floor looked around in shock. Surely that couldn’t have been it. Nubreed had only played for an hour. But sure enough that was it.

Dazz K started playing a bit of a funkier set, with a few tunes likes So-sun-mi Now that we have found and Listen to the basstone by Mulder. But the disappointed crowd dispersed from the dance floor, with the majority of punters heading outside into the beer garden.

I stayed around for some time, but I wasn’t really into the night anymore. The tunes were good and the place was still cranking but I think my over-expectations of Nubreed’s set had put a dampener on my evening. I must say, the songs I heard them play were fantastic; I just wish there had been a lot more of them, as it felt that they were cut off, just as they started to get a good party vibe going. If the new songs are going to be on their new album I will be definitely grabbing a copy though.

I look forward to what Heat has in store for us next but hope we don’t get another headliner playing for just an hour again.
