Being the FunkTrust before a long weekend – it had all the makings of a huge night. No need to worry about working the next day with yet another Friday hangover, have enough wits about you to call in sick with a decent excuse or make any drastic career decisions – hence the “no need to update your cv” byline. The lineup also made it one of the most diverse FunkTrusts in sometime. The rain didn’t keep the punters away – there was a line waiting for the doors to open at 10 and the line continued to grow as the club reached capacity quickly. Interestingly, the fact that there was nothing to do the next day was not championed with the typical FunkTrust voracity I had expected as people eased themselves calmly and in an orderly fashion into the Easter long weekend.
With my bling bling secured courtesy of Mr Styles, I strutted (as per the bling bling conditions of usage) straight to the bar, in true FunkTrust tradition. Dr Seuss opened for Mark Walton who comfortably settled into the earlier time slot and played a more laid back (and as always, technically brilliant) set.
Ajax unfortunately appeared to experience a few technical difficulties and his track selection at times made me wonder whether he thought he was playing at Mocha. His appearance gave me hope that the multitude of female fashion ‘faux pas’ victims were his fan club. Unfortunately, it appears they are now the staple of the new FunkTrust crowd at the Hunter. The recent appearance of Native American fashion at a Sydney block party is currently baffling Anthropologists worldwide…
As always the 2 Dogs impressed the up-for-it crowd with party tunes, hip hop anthems and oddities. Particular favourites were Ice T and Neneh Cherry’s Buffalo Stance. Will Styles, in true schtyla tradition, stunned the crowd by dropping The Black Crow’s Remedy as his first track, much to the delight of the more musically attuned punters in attendance. His typically energetic set included diverse tracks ranging from hip hop, house and breaks to drum and bass. His set complemented the upcoming style of the ‘incredibly toit’ NuBreed who did not fail to impress the audience. Their progressive dark and dirty breaks appeared to be the crowd favourite of the night.
The back room offered a hip hop haven with the likes of Loose on 12s and lil’ Jamey Taylor playing party favourites. The addition of the back room to the FunkTrust menu at the Hunter has been well received and appreciated by all – particularly lads longing for laid back beats to encourage their lager loutishness.
As always, FunkTrust delivered a great public holiday party and it’s gonna happen all over again next week – much to the delight of those 9-5ers that often miss out. I had a great time, afterall “I have bling bling”
