D.A.M.N, consisting of Jaxxy (Ajax), Bumpa (Bumping Bennie B) and Dangerous Dan (umm, Dangerous Dan), are a DJ triad that have successfully combined good friends, good times, good ideas and good music to create a gang bang of craziness at the Moulin Rouge on Friday nights. For these boys, D.A.M.N. (which they claim stands for Don’t Ask My Neighbours) has opened a window of opportunity to let them let the fine ladies dance…
Having never been there myself, I was curious to know what exactly can people look forward to at the Moulin Rouge? “It is a gangbang, lots of pretty young things running around dancing and pashing and all that fun stuff that kids do, oh and the music is good too…”
And the music? Certainly D.A.M.N has a signature style and their current sound has the clubs absolutely rockin’. Their initial explosion onto the music scene began with a mash up of sound and beats and has now evolved to a much harder, faster, better, stronger and louder mix up of tunes. Catch them play and I’m told you’ll hear a combination of “mostly electro and dirty chunky house music, it’s kinda loud but still a little bit musical and as much as I hate this word its still a bit funky (aaagh!). Its very dancefloor, I guess you could just call it party music”.
D.A.M.N. indeed know how to party and one can only guess that when they play together they themselves are having the time of their life. When I asked them the best thing about DJing together and how well they got on, D.A.M.N was happy to share the secrets of their working relationship. “Sometimes smooth, sometimes lumpy, but never grumpy, its just nice to be having a good time up there with your friends and you’ve always got someone who can get you a drink and stuff like that he aint heavy he’s my
brother”. Hmm, I’m sure any DJ out there can share the love of DJing with a bunch of mates and It’s probably the reason why these D.A.M.N. boys have got it going so well. All have individually supported international acts (although Ajax has had the largest share of international support spotlight) but that doesn’t count for any huge differences in their success – for these boys know they have made it out their own as D.A.M.N – not simply because of recognition.
It’s not all fun and games however for these boys have been working on not only an E.P but also a compilation album for the past year. And what can D.A.M.N. fans look forward upon purchase of this album? Dangerous Dan fills me in… “The compilation is total cheeseball but its still fun, its really listenable and all our friends love it, its coming out in a couple of weeks and its been finished for nearly a year but its been taking forever to get it done. The E.P we are doing at the moment, we have got some good collaborations and guests and we are just slowly working away in our studio, it’s called the Field of Dreams and Kevin Costner financed it”. Well obviously apart from having the lowdown in Hollywood studios these boys have certainly got a grip on Sydney and we saw them nominated in the Best Remix category at the DMAs this year. It’s not only Sydney punters who have been lucky enough to hear them play for D.A.M.N. have graced the clubs of Melbourne and Queensland as well.
With the New Year creeping up I wasn’t willing to place any bets on whether these boys would be partying or performing – its obvious they can, and will do both. Catch D.A.M.N on NYE at the Slip Inn in the courtyard with Tiga and Damien Lazarus from the City Rockers, followed by a New Years Day party six till six with Damien Lazarus as well as other special guests. The trio don’t stop there as the first few weeks of January will see the boys commence a tour with City Rocker Damien Lazarus, commencing in Sydney, then Brisbane, Gold Coast, Byron Bay, back to Sydney then off to Melbourne to finish causing chaos. And their future plans? “We plan to just keep working in the Field of Dreams and DJ and have fun and be nice to people and kiss girls and party”. I’m sure they won’t have trouble achieving their goals, and from this they offer their own piece of advice on how to become a success story within the dance music industry. “Have fun and if you are everyone else will and then you will get more shows and then you will have more fun, remember its all about making girls dance not all that people are down with the underground!”
Well there you have it fellow ladies, catch their performance this Saturday night at Renaissance to hear some “jiggy jiggy sex rock with a little bit of hip hop” and I’m sure you’ll have a D.A.M.N. good night.
You can catch DAMN weekly at their night Bang Gang, at Moulin Rouge in Kings Cross. They’re also appearing this weekend in the Renaissance Live room, along with Sneaky Sound System (info HERE), and 2004 Leagues Under the Sea on NYE (info HERE).
