Could 2004 get any more exciting? For the UK producer/DJ Miss Behavin 2003 was an amazing year, with a list of achievements that included: winning awards such as Rising Star 2003, finishing in the top 50 DJ’s to watch in 2003 and having her latest track “Such a good feelin” reaching number 6 in the UK dance charts and being selected for the nominations for ‘Best Breakthrough Act 2004’ at the 2004 Brit Awards. Plus her sponsors Sennheiser are using her in their global advertising campaign for the HD25 Headphone ad’s!
Phew! That’s a big year of work for the 25 year old from London. I’m tired just reading about it, so what now? Where to next for Miss Behavin? “I’m flying back over to New Zealand next month, before heading back to the UK. I’m really looking forward to 2004, I have a lot of exciting things going on, especially with The Charlys Angelz all girl tour nights! I must get back into the studio too; I’m working on a new tune with Tidy’s Guyver”.
Let’s backtrack a bit, how did you get started? “I bought my decks in ‘96, I’d mix in my bedroom but that was about it, I was far too shy to play out” So what triggered your playing in public? “May ‘98 a mate of mine was playing to 3000, he was totally off it & needed me to take over. He abandoned me in the DJ booth – that was the first time I had ever played out, talk about being thrown in at the deep end!” OMG! “All good though, I didn’t have time to get nervous. It’s a night I will never forget, from that point I’ve been addicted to DJin. To be honest I owe everything to him, it I wasn’t thrown into it like that I may not be where I am today, so Thanks Matt, you’re a star babe”
Sorry Niki, but you know I have to ask. Ibiza Uncovered, come on, you have to talk me through that! “It all happened 4 years ago when I lived out in Ibiza summer 2000 . Sky One’s Ibiza Uncovered series followed my mate DJ Miss Fire & I around Ibiza as we looked for dj work. Camera crews followed us for about 2 weeks, it was a great laugh at the time, but Sky One keeps repeating it… I can’t watch it now, I find it all very embarrassing! I’ll just end up shouting at the telly.. My God look at the pratt in the pink jeans, how big does her arse look?? OH that’s me…BUGGER!!” You are lucky that pink jeans are the worst of it; I cringe at the thought of cameras anywhere near me in Ibiza!
Niki, you’re one of the founder members of Flipside DJ’s – an all female directory and agency for female DJ’s, why the focus purely on female talent? “When I first started Djing, I found the scene pretty male dominated, it was tough being a girl so I decided I wanted to do something positive to give a helping hand to female dj’s in the future, that’s how Flipside was born. We run the only female agency and now also run femaledjs.com (the online web promotion for budding talent). All very exciting!” It’s a great line-up with the likes of Lisa Lashes, Lisa Pinup and Anne Savage… “Lisa & the crew certainly led the way! And now there are more & more girls breaking through. We have hundreds of cd demos at the office from talented girl dj’s around the world… its great! The more female spinners the better as far as I’m concerned!!” Hear, Hear!
It’s 5 years for me since I left the UK, the club scene seems to have changed and there is a lot of criticism going around at the moment. “Last year the UK Club scene took a bit of a dive, personally I blame it on the super clubs, door prices got too high and clubbers just got pissed off. Things have certainly turned back around; the UK clubbing scene was looking very healthy again before I came over. I played at some mad gigs. I reckon it will be the themed parties & the smaller more intimate clubs that will be rocking back in 2004!”
What do you have in mind for your music in 2004? “My music has changed a bit over the last year… I’m certainly not banging it as hard as I used to, I’m playing Hard Trance & that is where my heart is… keeping it Uplifting & Euphoric. Clubbers say my sets have a feel good vibe and make them smile, that’s so great to hear… that’s what DJing to me is all about… Big Happy Smiles” Have you worked on any CD’s, any plans too? “Yes I have a few plans up my sleeve for a Charlys Angelz CD Compilation”
Let’s talk about NYE; you were in New Zealand at the Resolution Festival? “wow what a crazy event. Everyone camped over, it was an amazing event with 4 different arenas. 5000 people going nuts on New years Eve…Such a good night! Crazy, crazy, crazy!!!” Then onto Sydney – What do you think? “Sydney totally rocks, I’m loving it here…in fact I’m loving it so much I’ve just cancelled my flight ticket home!! Gonna stay on a little longer!” any plans to come back again? “Without a doubt, YES I’ll be back later this year”
Lastly but by no means least, Niki, you’re playing on Saturday night in Sydney? “I’m looking forward to UN on Saturday, expect a set of Uplifting ‘feel good’ hard trance with plenty of anthems”. You can catch up with Miss Behavin’ at UN this Saturday. See ya there!
