Since bursting onto Brisbane’s bustling dance culture just a couple of years ago, Kid Kay Ferris have been riding a huge tidal wave culminating with the release of the long awaited album “Colour Me Badd.” And now with the forthcoming release of their single ‘Phil Collins Running’ along with its inclusion of the latest Clubbers Guide To CD it seems that another tidal wave of 80’s style electro synth breaks tech pop funk is about to come and wash our mundaine existance into oblivion. Danny Muller, half of the duo, drops into ITM to open his box of crayons on Kid Kay Ferris so far
Since the release of Colour Me Badd how have you found the overall reception of the album?
People are still surprised at the variety of the music on there, particularly rock kids, who think that dance music doesn’t have melody or vocals or changing structures. They are especially shocked at the level of production we can get out of a 100% home studio, which just doesn’t really
happen in the rock scene.
Your first single “Phil Collins Running” currently signed to Hussle made its way on to the latest “Clubbers Guide To…” CD. Have you found that pretty overwhelming?
Wow it’s like f**k are we really on that CD, along with like Kylie Minogue and Daft Punk? Things are really looking up for our profile in Australia. It won’t really come to fruition until the vinyl comes out though.
What have you guys been doing since the release of the album. Any more studio work at all?
Yeah we’re finding our feet after the release of Colour Me Badd still. We’ve just been getting our new individual styles developed, and the next step will be to combine it all into a cohesive unit for the next album. It is all a long way off though. Dont expect another album for about two
years.
Have you had any offers to record with any other artists at all? Local or International?
No. We are open to offers, but I think people know we tend to do our own thing. Current side projects include music/sound for PRIME 04 at the Queensland Art Gallery and recording/producing/mastering local band Friendship Audio in our home studio.
Have you any other tracks coming out soon, either thru Hussle or Nutznboltz?
Both Nutznboltz and Hussle are asking us for more stuff, so we’ll see what works for vinyl. We’d love to get a few vinyls under our belt before the next album.
How do the next 3 months look for Kid Kay Ferris?
Very f**king busy, as always. It’s a very tough job, with lots of running around and not much time to actually write music. If I have to look at another poster, I’ll puke.
You guys have been picking up a bit of Dj work of late. How have you been finding the experience? And what does a KKF DJ set consist of?
DJing is fun because we get to play our favourite music over loud sound systems. We just play quality dance tunes, past and present, and just a hint of cheese. We tend to play a lot of Chemical Brothers, and stuff that doesn’t usually make it to the clubs because it’s deemed too commercial, even though it’s brilliant music.
In regards to the upcoming party what can the crowd expect from KKF that nite?
Expect a full energy-charged set of pumping breaks, wicked tech/electro and full-flavoured 80s electro-disco-white-boy-funk.
Lastly, if you had the opportunity to record with any Australian artist who would that be (Aussie Idol and PopStars included)?
Ha, oh yeah I’d like to actually record with Shannon Noll. First thing is I’d shave that fucking mini-muff of his dumb face, then I’d throw him into a tar-pit and record his tortured, burbling death.
