The name Judge Jules is synonymous with the glasses wearing tattooed smiling superstar DJ. But given the chance, as any person is via his web site, he will gladly answer any question sent to him, personally. Ask Judge Jules for yourself just what he thinks of the term superstar DJ “The term was coined by the media, as a convenient and over-simplistic way of describing the sudden popularity of dance music. I don’t know any of my peers who went around believing themselves to be “superstars”. All the term did was create resentment amongst other DJ’s who didn’t consider themselves part of this bracket.” In just a matter of days, Judge Jules boards yet another plane to head to Australia. With dates only including the Eastern States at this stage, it’s no little wonder Perth fans sigh as they miss out yet again. “I’m not coming to Perth this time sadly considering one of my really good mates has just moved there. Its probably just logistics really because unlike a lot of DJ’s that tour that normally do two weekends, I can only do one because of my radio show in the UK, logistically it means that you cant really do all the major cities.” Jules explains. Judge Jules really hit the big time with his radio show every Saturday night. Its still a high priority and its not very often he isn’t home to perform the show in person. You can almost hear the smile as he eagerly moves onto one of his favourite topics “The radio show is going really well still with a million and a half listeners. The great advantage that I have is that it’s a Saturday night and you can kind of form an identikit minds eye picture of what your average listener is doing. Its 5 to 7 on a Saturday night which in the UK, and I’m sure in Australia as well is pretty much just when people are getting ready to go out, most people go to a bar first, then a club. You know putting their make up or in the shower etc etc at these times its quite good to do the show, I mean its probably one of the only shows in the week where you can form a mental image of what people are thinking and doing etc. The only time I have guests on is when I’m out on the road. We do the odd show live in front of an audience and then we have guest DJ’s.” Any one lucky enough to visit the UK in summer time would be easily forgiven for loosing at least one weekend visiting a festival. If for no other reason to experience it for themselves rather than reading a ranting review in the next $15 magazine to hit the racks. Jules, a regular visitor/guest at many a festival shares his favourites “My favourite festival in the UK would be Cream fields the major ones, Cream fields, Godskitchen, global gathering and homelands the general rule in the UK is the further up north you go the better the atmosphere becomes and cream fields is the furtherest one up north.” Judge Jules has latterly travelled the world. As much as he loves visiting and returning to Australia to see old and new friends, he recently travelled to uncharted territory on the Jules map of the world “Just last week I went to Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean. I’m also going to Housten in Texas, Athens, I regularly go to Ireland and America yet again. I travel constantly. If you want to get a flavour for what I do check out my website I have a diary with an archive with all my travels. I write quite a detailed report on every week’s activities for the last two years. Part of doing that from my perspective is that if I ever want to write a book at least I have something to jog my memory. I guess that’s one of my life’s goals but whether or not I ever achieve it is something else.” (
On a more personal note, Jules, at the tender age of 37, is very happily married and his adorable son Jake is due to turn 5 next month. Without sharing every personal moment in his life, he is however, happy to give enough details to keep even the nosiest fan happy for a few moments. “My wife and child are well, my son is now 5, and he started school. He is 5 next month that kind of limits it a lot, he did do a lot of travelling with me before but it has limited his ability to do that. He can only really come away during school holidays really. I don’t think the coolness with the job is something that he is old enough to understand. I don’t think they start teaching music until they are a bit older, it’s a bit too early to tell what aspirations he has.” And thoughts on retirement? “I’m 37 I have no plans of retirement, some are older than me but then again some are a little more economical with their ages too,” he laughs.
And in conclusion we wind things up with one of favourite topics, music. “I always predominately been in the trance camp trance has kinda been derived as being out of fashion in about 2001 and its done a complete full circle and become back in fashion again. 8 out of 10 of the worlds biggest DJ’s all play trance and it continues to be very successful, its nudged on in the cycle, not the way it used to but then again its probably not totally changed from its hey day in the late 90’s. In Ibiza we are coming up to our fifth year promoting Judgement Sundays and it’s a celebration every week!”
