The man with the Ill Type Sound is back. So soon I hear you ask? Why would you stay away when you’re selling out shows all around the country. Proving to be one of Australia’s favourite touring internationals, Martin Reeves (aka Krafty Kuts) is an honourary member of the Finger Lickin’ Records clan, sitting alongside labelmates Soul of Man, Plump DJs and Drumattic Twins as perennial Australian favourites. An esteemed producer and DJ, Krafty has released more 12”s and remixes than Courtney Love’s had court appearances. In the wake of his exceedingly well received album of last year, ‘Tricka Technology’, produced alongside musical prodigy A.Skillz, Krafty has been known to drop everything from funky breaks, to hip-hop, drum & bass, and technier nu-skool breakbeat styles. His return down under this July sees him playing a host of hotly anticipated club shows, ITM’s i_have_ADD investigates. Last in the country over the Christmas and New Year period, Krafty’s return to Australia comes not a moment too soon for fans of his funky and inimitable style. Although, bundle him up at a gig and ask him what number trip this is going to be and he’s more than likely to draw a blank, the Brighton-based native estimating this tour to be his eighth or ninth, “Bloody hell, I’ve lost count really! Although saying that, I still believe that I’ve got a way to go in Australia, I don’t think I’m overexposed. Some DJs come out 3 or more times a year, but for the last 4 years I’ve come out on average twice a year, once in the winter and once in the summer. We were going to do another tour at the end of the year instead of this mid-year one, but we decided it would be better to club shows instead of the bigger festivals and dance parties. Not everyone can pay the high ticket price of the bigger events so we wanted to do some smaller and more intimate shows.” Combining any number of syncopated genres with the flair and talent of a DMC turntablist (well, he did win a hotly contested DJ competition at the tender age of 12… having never actually DJed before), Krafty’s cuts and scratches have always held a special place in his antipodean fan’s hearts. Not surprisingly, the feeling is mutual, Krafty having become so accustomed to the Australian way of life that he views it as a home away from home while on the road, “Every time I come over there’s a certain element of the Krafty Kuts show that you’ll come to expect from me, but I still have a few tricks up my sleeve. I feel like I’m part of the family when I come over, like everyone at the show is my friend. I think Australian’s have a really good quality of being able to see through you if they’re too full of yourself, you’re quick to pick someone who is not quite honest. It’s a similarity I can see between the English and Australia.” Having shared the spotlight over summer with production partner A.Skillz, Krafty’s present tour sees him return to the decks as a solo act, “My sets with A.Skillz are technically and visually a little bit more stimulating. You get the two of us behind four decks, we can play more records, put in acapellas, and be a little bit more creative. But when you’re DJing with someone else you’re sort of compensating your sound, you need to make allowances. The A.Skillz and Krafty Kuts sets are a unique thing, it’s pure entertainment with a happy and funky vibe. This time around with me I’ve had time to prepare what I want to play on my own, with the focus a bit more on breaks. I’ve got a lot of great new tunes to play, I’m bringing out a whole lot of fresh new stuff!” Be sure to check out Krafty Kuts at one of his remaining Australian gigs this July: Thu July 22nd – Reef Hotel Casino, Cairns
