In Australia we’ve just experienced a taste of Dynamo Productions courtesy of a national tour. This was a great opportunity to catch up with Scott Hendy who completes the Dynamo Productions duo with Andy Smith. Scott aka Boca 45 is also releasing his solo album Pitch Sounds this year. I was privileged to watch Scott perform together with Andy at Sydney’s hallowed Sounds on Sunday. For the first time the courtyard was taken over by the crew of the cocktail lounge. They sliced and spliced as the crowd grooved. It was a blend of funk, breaks, hip hop and even a bit of reggae thrown in. Boca 45 has two passions, football and music. He is called Boca after the Argentinean football team: Boca Juniors, and 45 after the revolutions per minute that his beloved slabs of wax make on the turntable. When it comes down to it, however, this thorough bred Bristolian is an out and out Bristol City fan and is happy to play his records at whatever speed it takes! Boca 45 has released work on a number of independent labels including Hombre, Illicit, Superslick Stereo Sounds and High Noon Records before Grand Central snapped him up. Boca 45 dropped In The City featuring McKay in April of this year on High Noon, the 72 earned him praise from Scruff, Peterson and Lamacq as well as support from Ninja Tune and Tru Thoughts. Those familiar with his work with Andy Smith as Dynamo Productions will be keen to see how Boca 45 has developed his sound and In The City clearly heralded his new style. His debut solo album entitled Pitch Sounds (complete with football related artwork!) encompasses this evolution of sound: from cut up hip hop funk like Without A Doubt to late 60s early 70s influenced tracks like Take A Ride. The collaborations on the album are ingenuous, first up, Monkey Moo who features on the introduction to the album, astutely named The Countdown. Monkey Moo is part of the Bristol crew Aspects who are signed to DJ Yoda’s label Antidote. McKay who features on In The City worked with Boca 45 when he was writing with friend Geoff Barrow from Portishead. Barrow was looking for a soul singer/songwriter to work with and New York based McKay, backing singer for Kelis fitted the bill. She moved to Bristol to record her album and Boca 45 co-wrote a track for her – Thinking Of You with Geoff Barrow, she loved it so much she wanted to work with him again – In The City was the result. These Bristolians have toured Australia, Europe and the US over the last couple of years as part of Dynamo Productions, delivering dance floor shaking sets which take in hip-hop beats cut with classic rock and accapellas scratched over long-forgotten funk breaks. Pitch Sounds not only reflects a live Boca 45 DJ set, where he effortlessly slices spoken word, and instrument samples together and fits dirty drum breaks and scratches with timeless Soul and Hip Hop vocalists. Pitch Sounds also proclaims a new dawn in the Boca 45 sound, where he draws from his experience of a rich musical legacy. Check out the website for more info
