After struggling to crack the competitive drum & bass scene as a producer and DJ, Friction left in the late 90s to concentrate on finding a ‘real’ job. Returning in late 2001 with the track ‘Altitude’, produced alongside Stakka and Skynet, Friction took out the award for ‘Best Newcomer’ at the 2001 Drum & Bass Arena Awards. Clearly, DJ Friction’s ascent to the top on the global DnB scene has been a long time coming. Having first toured Australia back in 2002, Friction will return down under in September for a round of dates alongside SP:MC.

What tunes are you most proud of?

Altitude definitely, for me, the most groundbreaking tune I’ve ever made, Robocop was good fun as well.

How well do you think your stuff has aged? Are there any tunes you’re not particularly happy with in hindsight?

Of course, I’m never happy with anything I make to be honest but it’s all about progression and making everything you do better than the last.

Who are your favourite collaborative folk? Both professionally and personally?

I think it’s well documented that Swift is my closest friend in the scene. But I’ve got a lot of friends from this music. DJ wise I like doing back to back with Zinc and studio wise obviously I do a lot of work with Nu Balance.

Who would you most like to do a collaboration with that you haven’t already?

Dr Dre, pretty standard! And 50 Cent can be my hype man.

Can it be hard deciding which one of your many commitments to focus on?

Sometimes yeah, but you have to just allocate your time to the right stuff at the right time. I spend a lot of time listening to music and working out what kind of tunes to play.

What are your impressions of Australia?

Australia is sick man, I’m so glad I’m coming back. I came on tour here just under 2 years ago when I was just breaking through. The people just don’t give a fuck about the material shit and I love that.

Are you happier DJing or producing? Or do they stroll gracefully hand-in-hand?

DJing has always been my first love, I do like finishing a tune and playing it out though. It’s definitely a good feeling.

Dillinja’s come out in recent times to express his disappointment with drum & bass. How do you feel the genre is going?

I think the music is good but it either seems that your hear a wicked party tune or a top notch mellow tune, we need more in between tunes, like rollers, etc. I think people misquote Dillinja a lot as well, he loves drum & bass more that a lot of people I know.

Have you ever been tempted to have a crack at commercial success, like Roni Size or Andy C?

I’ve just finished a tune with Nu Balance called ‘Soul Surfer’ which is due out on Valve and is a vocal kind of commercial sounding thing, but as for commercial success… We’ll just wait and see how it goes.

Ever just wanted to pack it in for a bit and have a well-earned rest?

Only if I’ve had a very bad day in the studio!

Who do you have the most respect for within the drum & bass scene?

Anyone that works hard and doesn’t hate on people! There’s too much jealousy in this business man, people need to worry about their own business.

What, if anything, keeps you going in times of stress or when you’re feeling down?

My son!
