Highly sought after trance act Space Tribe have released their ninth album, called Collaborations. Space Tribe are consistently one of my favorite psychedelic acts, with their amazing fractal art and colorful party vibe. The main man, Olli Wisdom, has been writing trance music for over ten years. Born in England he partied in Koh Phangan and discovered the wild psychedelic parties on the beach and set up a small studio and began making trance tracks to play.
He moved to Goa, India, and spent four years there traveling and making music. He was sought after in Switzerland, the UK and Japan, and that was before Space Tribe was even heard of. Most Space Tribe lovers have heard of the clothing label, also called Space Tribe. Right now Olli is traveling all over the world to bring his sound to the ears of the uninitiated. I put together some questions to keep the fractals moving and the trance booming…
What was it like to work with GMS, X-Dream and CPU?
Great actually. It’s a learning experience to come up with a blend of music that we would otherwise not have.
Did you enjoy working with the artist on Collaborations?
Yes, sure.
What is your reason for writing music?
It comes from inside me, it’s my way of expressing myself.
What do you feel Space Tribe offers people?
A psychedelic experience, I may trigger things off in people.
If you guys landed on an alien planet and then exited your space ship and played a set, do you think the aliens would start dancing?
I think they already are.
Who is Space Tribe?
It was started by three of us. We stared the clothing company and I did the music and it all came together.
Can you describe the sound on Collaborations?
Full on, kicking, psychedelic, uplifting music.
Name some of the other artist that you have worked with on this album?
CPU, GMS and Luke Psywalker.
Since you started in the Goa trance scene and became an internationally renowned act, what changes have you noticed taking place in the psychedelic scene?
It evolves all the time. I have been playing for ten years. No real discernable change but technologies have changed a lot. I think that people dancing right across the planet is changing all the time. Japan is huge.
You have released nine albums what changes have you gone through as you produce each album?
Evolution. The intent is the same.
Do you feel you influence other musicians?
It’s not for me to say.
Tell us the vibe people can expect to get when they see you play live?
It’s supposed to wake people up.
What kind of equipment do you use in your studio?
Macintosh computers.
What would the world be like without Space tribe?
A little less colorful.
Would you give Brittany Spears a free Space Tribe outfit if contacted by her wardrobe assistant?
I’m sure we would. Space Tribe clothes have been seen at parties all over the world. Vince Clarke played in a Space Tribe outfit. Someone on Neighbors wore a Space Tribe outfit. It’s all over the planet.
Whose idea was it to work together with other international trance acts and release the album Collaborations?
I’d made a whole lot of tracks, maybe over a few months then another musician would come to the studio and we would work on the track together.
Which of the tracks off the album were written and produced in Australia?
Most of then. Alternate future, PCU, Luke Psywalker & X-Dream.
Are you spending much time in Australia while promoting the new album?
I don’t really promote. I play parties, I don’t do it to promote my album, it’s a side effect.
Where are you off to next?
Japan, Portugal and Denmark playing at big outdoor festivals with the likes of Talamasca. It will be a tour covering five cities.
