A genious renowned for his legendary mixing and production abilities as well as revered as an advocate for new and cutting edge sounds, it comes to no surprise that Steve Lawler was appointed judge for Malaysia’s Heineken Thirst III at Sepang F1 on April 30. Amidst his tight schedule with Thirst, the release of a new album and more projects to come, Steve was successfully cornered by ITM, where he shared some interesting moments during his career.
So Steve, were you ever a wild child with a rebellious streak? Any run in with the Law (pardon the pun)?
Oh yes. Definitely. No doubt. My first run in with the cops was when I was only 19. Can’t tell you what they’re for except for this time when I was busted for putting together an underground party at the Motorway, which saw at least 1000 mad music enthusiasts pounding away at the music. But, it was worth it.
Alright then, tough guy – what really happened at Guadalajara?
Well, we were peacefully spinning at Guadalajara when the club requested that I spin a hard trance record. When I declined having already fulfilling the conditions of the contract, they brandished knives at me and threatened to use them unless I got back up there. Anyway, in conclusion, my agent has mass communicated to the world for all DJs to avoid the hell hole like a plague. To all DJs, don’t even think about doing there!
Damn! Well, about rules, what do you think of them? Made to be followed or broken?
Broken, for sure! I don’t believe in rules. As far as I can remember, I have broken just about all rules at one time or another, which, fortunately, have propelled me to where I am now.
Such as?
My parents told me to get a ‘real job’. Broke that rule. They also told me to do as you’re told. That rule went down the drain too.
Then what rules do you live by?
One rule. Live each moment as if it’s your last.
What is the one rule aspiring DJs should adhere to?
Don’t give up. It’s hard struggle to the top but if you wait and be patient, eventually something good will turn up.
Tell us about your latest project(s)?
I have a few in my pocket. One of which is my night at Space in Ibiza themed ‘Viva’, which will see a collaboration with other artistes such as Sasha, Alex Neari, DJ Remo and Audiophile. Also, not forgetting Lights Out III. Look out for that!
Is it true that you’re cutting back international dates?
Absolutely not! I will be frequenting this region a fair bit.
True! Well, since you will be traveling a lot, what do you consider your comfort food and drink?
Vodka (pause) and sushi.
Now, something closer to home -the elections in Britain. Tell me, what are your thoughts on politics in relation to the music industry?
Two words. Bull shit! Politics is about bullshit. Don’t believe in them, don’t get involved with them and they don’t mix! Politics should stay out of music and if that’s the case, we should stay out of politics too!
