One of the world’s most defining names in dance music, John Digweed has been at the top of his game for well over a decade. DJ, producer, remixer, label boss, radio presenter, he’s done it all and evidently had the time of his life doing it. Following the recent release of his ‘Choice: A Collection of Classics’ CD on the Azuli label, ITM had the chance to ask the dance music legend some questions about his past, present and future.
This mix CD has a unique edge to it, weaving a story through time it seems, with an eclectic blend of flavours and beats. Can you tell us more about the story behind this selection?
It’s just what it says, a collection of classics but the reasons I consider them classics aren’t just because they’re ‘big tracks’. They played a part in the development of the scene I grew up in socially as well as in terms of my career or they hold fond memories. It’s not your typical choices. Some just remind me of specific years or parties. Others played a big part in moving things forward. I wanted to take people by surprise though so I avoided some that might have been a bit obvious.
When you were asked to do this collection of classics, how difficult was it to pick 28 tracks from your vast record collection?
Well more than that if you consider how many records I’ve been through in my career so far. It was not easy, there’s so much left out, but I’m happy with the package that came out of it. I enjoyed doing it and hopefully it’ll introduce some people to some great older music.
Were there one or two tracks that you had no doubt about including on the album? What was it about them that they had to feature?
Peech Boys and Jody Watley, they are two really stand out tracks which had to go on.
Your younger listeners will be surprised at this CD, and will no doubt learn more about you as an artist. What messages would you hope that the music would communicate?
There’ll be people getting into stuff now who won’t have a clue about some of this stuff. The great thing is, and half the reason these are classics, is that they still sound fresh. If you’re into electronic music you should know about these records, as they’re the ones that pushed things on a step. That said, I’m not out to teach anybody from some great pedestal, hopefully it’ll just be introducing people to some great music.
Are there any tracks, that you have, or have not, included on this mix that remind you of pivotal moments in your life?
There was quite a lot that I thought were a little bit too obvious, really big tracks that everybody probably already knows or owns. Some tracks have to get missed out as you’re confined to 160 minutes of CD at best…but I’m still happy with what’s on there.
Your bio describes an exciting adventure into the world of an international DJ and producer. How hard did you have to work at it and what sacrifices did you have to make to get to where you are today?
I worked really hard, but then I really enjoyed it too and it’s not like working in an office where if you don’t enjoy it, it seems a lot worse! It takes a lot of energy and time and effort, but the sacrifices you make have to worth it because you’re getting something great on the other side. There’s some stuff I’ve missed out on, but there’s a lot I’d have never done unless I worked my way up.
Where to from here for John Digweed?
I’ve really enjoyed the last 12 months of DJing and done some great tours and played with some great DJs like Luke Fair, Desyn Masiello, Jonathan Lisle and Nic Fanciulli. Hopefully more of that, some production with Nick Muir and some development of the Bedrock records label. The label is really starting to broaden itself and it’s exciting but needs a lot of careful attention to make sure the word gets out there and we’re on the right track…it’s gonna be a busy year!
John Digweed’s ‘Choice: A Collection of Classics’ CD is out now through Azuli/Stomp. Digweed will be touring Australia later in 2005, stay tuned to ITM for further details as they’re announced.
