This is an exciting week for home nightclub. For the second week of their Gold World Series project they are taking two bold steps. The first is taking a unique spin on back2back DJing by implementing a full 360 degree rotating stage. The second bold step is bringing back some of Sydney’s favourite DJs to the main room for another does of quality progressive sounds. It seems the marriage of technology and techno music has once again proven true, and we talk to home nightclub as well as DJ Ben Korbel regarding what punters can expect this Saturday.
ITM: So what was the inspiration for this unique idea? Had you been influenced by events that had done this before?
home: For the second week of our Gold World Series we wanted to do something unique. We were interested in the back-to-back style of DJing but we wanted to make it more than just your average four turntables and two DJs back-to-back that you already see today.
The whole 360 degree rotational stage was just a crazy idea that came up in our heads, we had no idea it had been done before. But even though rotating stages have been done before, they’ve never been done like this; with three DJs on six turntables playing a 3hr set back-to-back.
We have a 3×3 meter stage in middle of dancefloor that fully rotates, there are no power cords or cables, so the sound will be transmitted to the main sound system via radio transmitters where our av manager takes control for 3hrs.
ITM: Was it a logistical nightmare to conceive?
home: Once the concept came up, it was quite simple. It was more of an idea of pushing our talented locals to their limit. It’s a chance for them to do something totally new, whilst play to a large crowd. Getting DJs to go back-to-back was the main idea, but it has already been done so many times before, so three DJs all at once should produce some interesting results. The technology is there for it to be possible, but it’s just gonna be about making it happen, it’s gonna sound fucking wicked…
ITM: So why choose Ben Korbel, Trent Anthony and Declan Lee? One would assume a futuristic progressive sound is what’s gracing the main room…
home: Ben, Trent and Declan are all very good DJs and have worked the main room before, and yes the sound will probably be a predominantly progressive sound. We felt it was the music that they played that was well suited to this type of thing because you can layer it and go back-to-back successfully with their music. You can have a minimal-laying effect and bring records over each other etc., and they are talented enough DJs to handle it.
So what is the DJs perspective on all of this? We talk to Ben Korbel about what he expects on the night.
ITM: Have you ever played back2back with two other DJs on a rotating platform which will broadcast your music through radio transmitters? How do you feel about it?
Ben: It’s going to be quite a technical mission, but we fully intend to nut it out. We’re getting together on Thursday and Saturday to ‘rehearse’. Trent and I play together a lot anyway and Declan is parallel with what we do. It’s going to be the one year anniversary of me playing the main room at home so it should be fun.
Check out Ben Declan and Trent nut it out this Saturday night at home. That’s 3 DJs on 2 turntables each playing 3hrs of simultaneous progressive tunes and future techno.
