Internet forums have been a great way for like minded people to get in contact with each other. Since their rapid growth late in the last millennium they have been popular with serial killers, pedophiles and overweight teenagers. However it’s not only the violent and the lonely that have seen friendships blossom on the information super highway, it now seems that Sydney’s trance scene has been given a big leg up, thanks to a chance meeting on an online forum. Not just any forum as it happens, but our very own ITM forums! With their debut release A Night Of Trance fresh off production line, the names Karvan & Condivi are set to become firmly cemented as pioneers of the Australian trance scene.

Just the technical input alone in your debut album is phenomenal, did any of you have a musical background before you got into trance?

Dave (Condivi) used to be in a rock band when he was younger but then his voice broke and he could no longer sing. Myself I used to be into heavy metal, the eat your brains out with a hot glue gun style music, as well as being a massive dominatrix.

Dominatrix huh? Well then, perfect time for my next question. What do you guys get up to when it comes to employment?

Dave coaches tennis a few days a week and I juggle my time between uni and working as a patents attorney.

Does working so close with someone constantly involve making compromises or does it give you twice as much drive?

As far as compromises go, yes and no. Sometimes you have to compromise, but it usually ends up being for the best. It’s nearly impossible to write a decent track without the perspective of another. We believe you should never get to precious about your music, instead be able to take criticism when it is given. Some people get conceited and say ‘well I don’t care I am doing my own thing and if people don’t like it they can deal with it’. Whereas we like to listen and learn from others whenever we can.

A Night Of Trance is about to be released, and it contains all original material from you two, can you give us a quick run down of it.

The CD comprises eleven tracks of original work, mixed together like a live DJ set. We are very excited and nervous at the same time as we tried to do something dramatically different from a normal uplifting trance CD. We have fused elements of tech, electronica, electro, as well as even throwing in a little flavour of progressive house. In addition, this CD stays true to our live energetic performance that we have worked hard to gain a reputation for.

As you have mentioned it’s a completely original piece of work, but even the most original pieces of art have drawn inspiration from somewhere else. Where do you draw yours from?

Initially when we started this CD the artists we drew inspiration from included Ferry Corsten, Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto and Paul Van Dyk. As we expanded our horizons to other genres we got inspiration from others such as Sander Keleinenberg, James Zabiela, Desyn Masiello and Garbiel & Dresden. Playing live was also an inspiration for some of our newer tracks as we really began to get a feel of what people like to hear at certain times in the club. Let’s hope they also enjoy them the way they have been reworked on this CD.

Where to from here?

Our CD launch is on the 12th of November at T2. It should be a great and exciting night. We are planning on doing things a little different compared to the way we usually do them, expect something along the lines of Sasha vs James Zabiela. Also, we are in the process of organising a national tour for the CD. Apart from that it all depends on if you guys like the CD or not. So please like it!
