Having only owned a pair of turntables for three years, Kate has rapidly ascended the DJ ladder in Sydney, becoming renowned as a techno DJ who’s able to rock any party she plays at. Her performances are full of style, flair and fun – no navel-gazing from this young selector, who at the age of 25 has already played with some of the best in the world at some of Sydney’s biggest venues. Legal-Affairs caught up with this dynamo to see what’s going on in her world…
After debuting in 2003 at the Mandarin Club, it wasn’t too long before she regularly started appearing on techno line-ups, racking up the international supports as she progressed. Her favourite gig was earlier this year at the Magnetic party at the Gaelic Club. She gushes about the night, “It was an awesome venue with a massive sound system and a sea of happy smiling faces! It was also my first back to back set, with Tom Haze, who I had a rocking time mixing with. And then there was Chris Liebing – he has such a great persona behind the decks. Just feeling his energy and seeing his happiness made me want to dance… add the awesome techno he played and voila – What a gig!”
Rocking a style of music that she describes as “stompy and funky with fat basslines,” Kate brings her own take on the techno sound, having the skills and sensitivity to bring dynamicism, soul and complexity to a genre often derided as repetitive and mindless. As she grows as a DJ and a person her taste is expanding – her current inspirations indicate this – “DJs I’m loving at the moment? John Dahlback, Tiefschwarz, John Tejada, Eric Sneo, Adam Beyer. To be honest though, at this point in time, I’ve been having a blast playing at Sydney gigs alongside some of the best local talent there is!”
And it’s a local event where you’ll next be able to catch Kate – the High-Jinks All-Nighter, at Bar Broadway this Saturday. Kate’s played with the High-Jinks lunatics a few times now, and it’s clear that she has a fondness for their madness – “High-Jinks… What can I say? I love everything about the party! They’re always fun. Look at the love the High-Jinks Three pour into it – the different themes, dress ups and decor, the support they give up and coming DJs and the beautiful music at every party. They always keep the party fresh. And the great people that head along because of the awesome vibe – it’s all top notch.”
The future is undeniably bright for Kate, and as she plans her next moves – production is on the agenda, and she’s keen to enrol in a sound engineering course – the gigs continue to roll in – it won’t be too long before she appears at a venue near you.
Kate plays the High-Jinks All Nighter this weekend, Saturday November 12th at Bar Broadway. She’s also appearing at Pub Day on NYD. Check out ITM Whatson for more info on both events.
