Since purchasing his first set of decks at fifteen years of age, Carl Cox has achieved more in his career than most could ever dream of, having dominated the dance music industry not only as a DJ but also a producer, manager, radio presenter and product ambassador. With copies of his albums selling worldwide, he has reached ‘pop star’ status in the UK and has received many accolades including “DJ of the Year” in several countries and “DJ Mixer of the Year”.
From Bora Bora to Bangkok, Osaka to Orlando, Carl’s talent and his music has seen him visit a plethora of destinations. It may surprise some of you that of all these places Carl has chosen Victoria’s peninsula suburb of Frankston to spend his summers. With a brand new studio near completion and the relocation of his 100,000 strong record collection he will spend his time watching TV, having BBQs with friends and generally escaping his usual hectic lifestyle. ITM caught up with ‘The People’s DJ’ to discuss his sea change and upcoming tour of Australia.
Seeking a better quality of life Carl has settled into his new home and surrounds. Taking some time out to be Carl Cox “the person” he is loving the Peninsula. But there isn’t too much time to relax as the Carl Cox and Friends tour continues this weekend. Commencing his tour at the Gold Coast’s Summafieldayze on New Years Day by playing to a 15,000 strong crowd Carl is pumped. With shows in most major cities in Australia the tour will also visit Darwin, Bendigo & Geelong. After years of fans having to travel far and wide to see him perform Carl wants to give something back to the punters located in these areas who are commonly left untouched by such tours. Now that dance music is becoming widely accepted he has an opportunity to reach as many people as possible.
After becoming famous for his three deck action Carl has exchanged his turntables for three CDJs, and he will never look back. Confident that the quality of his show has improved ten fold he enjoys the creativity that this technology offers and the reduction in technical problems such as feedback. Now with most music becoming available on download Carl sees this as the future of DJing. He is more than happy to more on from vinyl. For those if you unconvinced, Carl promises to put the same energy and enthusiasm into his performances with a quality that can only be found using CDs.
If you are unable to make any of the dates in the tour don’t be too disappointed! You can tune into Carl’s radio show every week ‘Carl Cox Global’ by logging on to http://www.carlcox.com, and believe me you wont be alone. Only in its second year Global is the world’s fastest growing electronic music show with over a million listeners tuning in every weekend. Covering a broad spectrum of music the show has featured guest DJs such as Laurent Garnier, Fatboy Slim and Todd Terry.
As for Carl’s future plans after the tour he intends to start work on a new album possibly featuring some of Australia’s up and coming talents. Unable to disclose any names he has come across some very impressive young vocalists that he is looking forward to working with. Remembering the success of Josh Abrahams Carl is more than happy to lend his name in aid of this country’s new artists while soaking up the sun. So, next time you decide to visit Victoria’s peninsula suburbs and you see a Monaro fly passed with a face you think you recognise…..look twice and give a wave, it is Carl Cox. Australia’s newest resident superstar DJ.
