From tiny aliens invading Revolver to Gigantic DJs with crook backs, all this and more is a day in the life of one of Melbourne’s best-known DJs “Spacey Space”. Anyway if you’re not from Melbourne or perhaps live under a rock I’ll help you with some background.
Patrick James Donlon grew up in a quiet little Victorian town of Drouin where he equipped himself with his own language known as baby gurgles, after leaving home at a young age Patrick found himself at a nightclub disjointed by the crap he was hearing or not due to a bad case of tinitis, he boarded the decks and blasted off. After starting professionally in 1993, Patrick Donlon became ‘Spacey Space’ he held several residencies and became a local legend after hosting one of Melbourne’s longest and most popular radio shows ‘Space Station’ on ‘KISS FM’.
Gigs have included the ‘Big Day Out’, Earthcore and Welcome 2000 to name a few, not to mention residencies at nearly every banging club in Melbourne, Spacey is also a accomplished producer remixing locals and having his audio tracks featured in several short films and also the honour of his music producing skills being used for a PS2/XBOX demo game ‘Heroes of the Pacific’.
His style is almost always described by punters as totally fucking insane, but Spacey prefers to describe it as Electro with some mash-ups and RnB bootlegs thrown in for good measure now add that with a slash of Quality house and timeless classics and well there you go. I (bongboy28) call it ‘All fucked up with now where to go except up electro-funk.
Bryce Jarvis volunteered to interview the covert one that is Spacey and pry him away from the his MySpace website and talk all things strange… Believe me when I say I was more confused about the mystery that is the man after reading his answers, keep an eye out for the revealing secret in question 4.
I’ve had the pleasure of catching your sets on two occasions, first being BlockParty3 and secondly at Bamboozled. I was the annoying photographer sticking the cam in your face, anyway I loved your freshness in track selection along with oldies and your mixing blew me away. What’s the secret Space?
Well, it’s a secret obviously. And I am NOT telling.
Any releases in the pipe works?
Well, nothing in the pipe works, but I hope to upload a new DJ mix to my website http://www.spaceyspace.com soon, and I occasionally put some of my re-edits on my myspace page http://www.myspace.com/djspaceyspace which you can add to yours if you want to.
Well, in this case, the rumours are sort of true. T-Rek and I are in fact jacking up a track for those sick cunts.
Is Boogs your long lost love child?
Actually, he is my niece.
No seriously you guys have worked a massive amount of times together, what’s your working relationship like, and are there future plans to collaborate?
I like Boogs because he is tall so I don’t have to stoop to talk to him in a club. Being a tall DJ is hard because the decks are usually too low so you get a sore back. But despite this there some bloody tall bastards out there. Hello, Luke and Richard.
Can you tell us about your 7-hour versus sets at Honkytonks? Is there any planning involved or is it all just on the fly?
We have played together about a thousand times, so we know each other’s music really well. Thing is, we don’t like each other’s records at all, so the way we have to work it is to mix in our records in as quickly as possible so we don’t have to listen to each other’s tracks for too long.
Strangest experience at a gig or club night?
The day at Revolver when miniature U.F.Os flew in from the back stairwell and shrunk all the people to the size of jelly beans and transported them to Uranus.
What’s one of your favourite memories from Ding?
NYE at Honkytonks the year Gemini missed his flight from the US. What year was that? Ah, memories…
Main Influence’s in your career?
The Big Bang, of course. Also, I would be where I am today without Time, Gravity, and Energy.
5 tracks that never leave your record bag?
Well there’s a copy of ‘No Way Back’ by Adonis that’s been in there since 1986.
What are your favourite past time outside music?
Stealing cars, Myspace, and sleep.
