ITM’s Meester (James Tannock) caught up with new boy on the block, Steve Lind, who’s made his way into the big time in the big smoke from humble beginnings Canberra. From drums to records and most things in between, our man Steve has the skills.

Congratulations on how far you’ve come. How are you feeling about music right now – what’s doing it for you?

Thanks mate! Sydney has been really good to me so far. I’m feeling good about the people here. All the parties I’ve played seem to have a nice eclectic crowd that really appreciate my sound, which I think is equally eclectic. Music wise, I’m loving all the random breaks bootlegs of all the big house tunes doing the rounds at the moment, they always go down a treat.

Tell us a bit about your background, I understand your mum was a piano player and you played the drums?

I still have the same old kit I got for Christmas some 13 years ago. I hardly play it much anymore but can’t seem to bring myself to get rid of it. Who knows…maybe I’ll find some other dj rockstar wanna bes like myself and do the whole dance rock thing? Tight pants and flannel a must!

What are some other influences of the music you play? What’s “your sound”?

Hip hop is a huge influence on my djing. Although I mainly play breaks I adopt a lot of hip hop techniques like using heaps of samples, accapellas and quick mixing.

Who do you have the most respect for in the music world?

I have respect for anyone who’s just doing there own thing and not thinking too much about the band wagon. I really dig what Break Inn residents the Impossibles and Bass Kleph are doing at the moment. Also Ajax and the Bang Gang boys, cause they’re just cool as shit.

You’re resident at Chinese Laundry and Sunset Breaks, among others, what else are you doing with yourself?

I’ve had the chance to play at Sounds on Sunday a few times now and really enjoyed the experience. The crowd down there at the Greenwood sure know how to party! I also have some gigs coming up at Ruby Rabbit and the Wanna Break? Party in the next couple of months, which is very exciting. Aside from djing, I host Break Inn @ Chinese Laundry on Friday nights which is a lot of fun. The night is growing stronger every week thanks to the fantastic local line up and constant stream of the scenes finest internationals.

What are your highlights so far in life and music?

The move from Sydney to Canberra has been an amazing time for me both personally and musically. I find there to be a lot more freedom to just do what you want to do here. The kids here love to party…I’m all about it!

Lowlights?

The amount of tequila I’m expected to consume by the promoters at every gig!! Great at the time; not so great come Monday morning.

You’ve been DJing for quite a while now, any thoughts of moving into production?

I’m really just concentrating on getting gigs and being a better dj at the moment. The whole computers and production thing is a little daunting to be honest, I’m no Bill Gates! When I get some time and spare cash maybe I’ll give it crack. I’m quite happy playing other peoples music at the moment.

I always ask this of a DJ – Do you think vinyl is gonna die?

I think all the illegal bootlegs and mash ups that keep popping up will help to keep vinyl alive. Also the hip hop scene will always be dominated by vinyl. As far as the big house/electro goes, most of that stuff has a pretty short shelf life so most guys are just downloading and burning because it’s cheaper. I think good music will always have a place on vinyl.
