With over a decade’s worth of experience behind the decks, releasing five albums (as well as featuring on numerous others), and co-managing his own label – Digital Psionics, you could say Luna Orbit is a bit of a psyoneer.
Luna Orbit began his psychedelic career in the summer of ‘98 when, along with Luke Psywalker he formed Digital Psionics – an innovative record label based in Byron Bay, devoted to supporting new Aussie talent and consistently bringing the goods to the dance floor.
In a scene full of vehement puritans, Digital Psionics is refreshingly diverse and open minded about the music it plays as well as the direction it goes in. “The scene seems to moves in waves, rising up and down with influxes of new people and ideas. I see it on a rise at the moment with a fresh outlook for the future. But with new styles of psy-trance that have arisen has seen some division in the party culture. This to me seems pointless we can all somehow work together” says Luna, “The music is always evolving, I just follow the path of the music I like, not looking into what style it is etc. If I like it, I play it. So following this path has shown me new directions and my sounds are always evolving but always keeping in mind dance-floor friendly sounds.
While they’re definitely dance-floor friendly, Luna Orbit’s DJ sets – and his live sets under the moniker – Dark Nebula fuse relentlessly driving bass lines, haunting melodies and quirky samples to create a distinct, fast paced journey through some awesomely dark realms of psy. Whether its his passion for Cradle of Filth or just the satisfaction of seeing the crowd go nuts, Luna Orbit’s sets have a distinct edge that will definitely push you to your physical limits.
When he’s not behind the decks or slaving away in the studios of Digital Psionics, Luna Orbit likes to live up to his name, travelling around the globe: “I’m in a Tokyo hotel room at the moment. Playing in Japan has always been a favourite of mine. This is a true psychedelic city and they appreciate the sounds of the future very much, Which is very inspiring.”
As well as Japan, Luna Orbit has played all over the world including the infamous Boom Festival in Portugal in 2002, a celebration of global art, music and culture held every two years in Portugal’s sun-drenched countryside on the shore of the Lake Idanha-a-Nova, “Performing a live set to 25000 people in the centre of a 360 degree dance floor was a fantastic experience” he says.
As well as producing his own independent material as Dark Nebula, Luna Orbit has collaborated with numerous artists around the world including Kluster from Sweden, “We have quite different sounds, but together, we created something very exciting and fresh, I look forward to working with him again on my travels on day”. Though not giving much away when asked what we can expect to see from Dark Nebula in the future, Luna assures us it will be ‘wonderful’.
In addition to this, Luna is very excited about his new venture with Luke Psywalker, an exciting new musical project called UFO. Though still considered work in progress, the boys have received some great responses from UFO’s first track, and we are all waiting with baited breath.
