Prolific producer and DJ Alex Smoke has written an unbelievable amount of music in the relatively short time he has been producing. Now based in Detroit, the 4/4 stuff Alex Smoke churns out is more assured and impressive than anything you’ve ever heard. With the backing of Soma Records, as tight a ship as ever sailed out of Glasgow’s yards, he rarely gets to see his home town anymore, which is tough ‘cos it’s a friendly place and lots of people there like him. Hey ho, that’s life when you’re a hot new talent.

Straight off the tarmac and into the Red Bull Music Academy, Alex Smoke has very little time for relaxation these days, but still manages to find ten minutes to run through his top 10 chill out tracks for ITM.

Autechre – Rsdio
This track is very early Autechre and is relatively straight for them. The kind of track you listen to when you’re in the mood for something that’s pleasantly interesting, when you’re not in the mood for anything too challenging.

Boards Of Canada – Zoetrope
This track is super simple, just a melody with no beats. Zoetrope is 4 minutes of subtly changing harmonies, very pure.

Porn Sword Tobacco – Watts Tower
This guy apparently writes his music in a shed in the woods in Sweden, so the mood is super isolationist….You get a sense of dust and crickets. It’s very organic and strange.

Schneider TM – The Light 3000
This is a cover of a Morrissey/ Smiths track, The light. It’s super glitchy – glitch pop.

Burial – Forgive
This is a new dubstep album and is far and away my favorite release this year. It’s very dense, dark and deep. When I need to chill out I definitely like listening to more dark and deep music as opposed to happy and light tunes… I’ve just realised this list is getting progressively darker as I go on..

Junior Boys – Under The Sun
This track is relatively poppy and quite soothing. This is a pop rock outfit from Canada.

Tricky – Hell Is Round The Corner
A great record – classic Bristol sound, from the Portishead/ Massive Attack era. Again, quite a dark track.

Rhythm & Sound – Queen In My Empire
Electronic dub from the guys behind Basic Chann… Dub reggae electronic.

Philip Glass – Dracula Score
The soundtrack Glass did for the 1931 Dracula film. I’m a big movie fan so I love this, it’s a really amazing, string quartet. I’m a big fan of classical music, things like Bach unaccompanied, Dvorjak , Rachmaninoff.

John Taverner – Funeral Ikos
Writes for the orthodox church, quite dense. Interesting harmonies, a really beautiful piece of music. Choral work.

Alex Smoke plays in Melbourne this Saturday night at Collideascope at the Espy. Check your local whatson for other shows.
