Hooli: Electro house hooligan

Sydney’s a relative small dance scene when compared to, say, its larger couterparts in Europe. It’s often seen as a blessing for those who love the tight knit feel of what goes on in the clubbing community down under. But, for the aspiring DJ this intimacy can make getting a highly coveted residency slot that much harder. The plus for us punters is that those that eventually do make it are of a higher calibre. So, when a new name starts to circulate on the Sydney scene its worth paying close attention.

The latest up and coming star of the local scene, and newest addition to the Onelove team, is a talent laden young man by the name of Daniel Hoolahan, better known by his club alias, Hooli. What is mind blowing is that Hooli has, so far, managed to achieve in just a small amount of time what many can’t get close to after years of practice.

Interestingly, it appears that Sydney’s housing squeeze is partly responsible for spurning this awesome talent. “I played the drums for years and when I moved out of home I realised it wasn’t feasible to keep the drum kit with the noise and space restrictions of an apartment. A few of my friends had turntables at the time which I’d occasionally jump on for shits and giggles, and it wasn’t long before I caught the bug, flogged off the Pearl Masters Series, and invested in my first set of Technics.”

Obviously a man who can handle all genres if he wanted to I asked him how he would describe his current style. ‘Electro house is a dirty word ‘round these parts, but f*ck it! When I can get away with the techier or proggier stuff I love to chuck that in too.” When he’s not mixing it up Daniel shows his other artistic talents as the in-house art director for a magazine publisher and spends his down time with the love of his life, Sarah.

How would Daniel describe his current situation as a Onelove player though? “It’s been unreal. I’ve met some really cool people with a wealth of knowledge and experience, so hopefully it’s rubbing off onto me. Being amongst the big names week in week out, and furthermore realising that they are really nice guys, has been a great experience.”

The Onelove team have obviously chosen wisely by adding to their select few with an injection of fresh blood. There is no doubt that we will be hearing more of Hooli as discerning clubbers all around Australia are exposed to his wicked sound.

You can catch Hooli playing Onelove at Tank on Saturdays.
