ITM gets down and dirty with the queens of booty on the eve of their first Australian tour. Do they look like sluts? Are they really too drunk to copulate? Read on to find out…
ITM: Is this your first time in Australia?
Debbie D: It’s our first time Down Under.
How many interviews have you done before speaking to me?
This is our third. They’ve just started now, this morning and they’ve been one after the other.
Where are you?
We’re in Oregon right now, in a motel room. I don’t have much time to talk, hey.
I’ll get straight into it then – so, do you look like a slut?
No!
So what does a slut in Oregon look like then?
I don’t usually know when people are sluts. You get called a slut but you don’t usually set out to look like a slut.
Where did the name for that track come from then?
That’s what people used to call us! We used to get about and up on stage not wearing a lot.
That’s a good look here now that we’re coming into summer.
Yeah we’re looking forward to not wearing too much.
So what reception did that song have around the world?
It was pretty good, a lot of people have been called sluts. We kinda connected with that. Some people didn’t like the name but then they probably don’t like our music anyway.
You also found success with 2D2F ... that’s too drunk to fuck yeah?
(laughs) Yeah!
When have you found yourself in that situation?
Oh it’s not really about what happened to us, it’s happened to everyone you know, you go out, come back… and nothing happens.
How do you perform that song on stage? Do you have a special dance for it?
Yeah we get down to it, and a lot of people love it, they go ‘yeah, 2D2F, that’s happened to me!’ It’s happened to a lot of people.
So you find there’s a certain type of fan that really connects with you?
That kinda track connects with everyone since it’s happened to just about everyone, not just us.
The third track you guys have found fame with is You love this ass so tell me, do you love your ass?
Ah yeah, it’s all right, I mean, a lot of people think it’s okay.
Do you get fans shouting out ‘I love that ass too’?
Yeah we get them saying ‘We love that ass’. It’s funny that everywhere we go it’s really popular.
So how do you cope with having such a hot ass?
(laughs) How am I supposed to answer that?!
Do you have to put it in ice at the end of the performance?
Yeah, I gotta get into a tub after a gig (laughs).
How have you two managed the fame you’ve gathered since you started in 2001?
It comes in waves and spurts. For us, we really weren’t expecting anything out of it, we lived together and were just having a good time in Alphabet City and when it came it was really unexpected. We’re always pumped with what we have. We had these really fun parties in New York and then we had to go to Europe, then once we went there we had to go to Japan so it’s like wow, now we’re going to Australia. It’s a really far away point on the map.
What’s your best concert been?
I can’t say really, there’s been so many and they’ve all been so fun and cool. This year we’ve seen so many things that are fresh and cool, but of the more recent ones I’d have to say Tokyo.
Tokyo? What are your Japanese fans like?
They’re really fun, they get really into it. It’s good fun.
What was the best song there?
They really liked Bang! a lot, they like all the crazy fast songs. It wasn’t so big here in the US but they really liked that one there.
Where’s the name Avenue D from?
When we first started we both lived on Avenue D, which is in New York on the Lower East Side in Alphabet City. In the ‘80s it was really dangerous, they used to say that Avenue A is for adventure, B is bold and D is death, because nobody would go there. When we lived there it wasn’t so bad, but it’s still got that bad reputation. Bad avenue. And both our names start with D so we were all like ‘what do we call ourselves… Avenue D…’ It made sense.
Avenue D head to Australia for this first time in November. Don’t miss the show, everyone will be talking about it for weeks!
Sat Nov 4th – Sydney, Killer
Mon Nov 6th – Melbourne, Onelove Cup Eve Party
Fri Nov 10th – Brisbane, Empire Hotel
