Nick Thayer will take to the stage at Revolver accompanied by an impressive list of accomplished musicians to showcase his forthcoming debut album High Toned and Fancy this NYE.
The six piece live band features John E Vistic (vocals and guitar), Mikey Chan (guitar and fx), Don Brondolino (bottom end), Phil (hitting things) and messrs Stray and TPJ on the visual explosion spectacular.
“All of the people involved are guys I’ve played with for many years…it has been great finding an opportunity to perform with them again. A couple of calls and some erstwhile coercion was all it took” said Thayer.
The talented and well-established DJ has played in clubs all over the country and also played the Boiler Room at the Big Day Out. Thayer knows how to work an audience and hold it captive with an array of left of the middle, quirky noises and beats. He isn’t one to give much away, so when he was asked what people could expect from the band’s performance, his answer was curious but vague. “It will change your life…a six piece band with two visual guys on NYE is only half of what to expect. I spent $100 on 20 computer monitors yesterday.”
Something tells me that computer monitors won’t be the only seemingly out of place object on the night. It may be just hype but the official synopsis of the evening’s events states no expense has been spared. No live cliché will be left unexploited and no high five will be left hanging. In other words, if that’s anything to go by, it’s going to be a potentially bizarre, perplexing, hilarious and undoubtedly never to be repeated performance.
Whilst the live show sounds extremely enticing, it does make you wonder why Thayer would suddenly want to collaborate on stage after countless years of solo performances. Most people start off in a band before going down the solo path, but Thayer is taking the reverse route to an unknown destination and there’s little doubt the results will be astounding.
“I love performing. There’s something comforting about Djing solo because I feel totally in control, which means I know if something is going to happen when it should because I’m doing it. That being said, with a band, there is a degree of the unexpected which adds to the energy and excitement.”
Recently Thayer has worked with the live band line-up to produce High Toned and Fancy. “Working with them on stage is only a natural extension of that. The guys involved are all seasoned professionals so working with them all has been relatively easy.”
The decision to launch the album accompanied by a live band “is in direct response to the album material, but it has always been a part of the big plan for world domination. This seemed like the perfect time to launch the whole thing.”
“I have been trying to conceive a way to translate the sort of music I’m writing, for the album, into a club format and I have been forming the best way to translate that (the music from the album) in a band context.”
Revolver’s resident DJ is quite nervous about hitting the stage this NYE. It’s been a long time between drinks since he strapped on a guitar and strummed out melodies to an audience. Nevertheless, Thayer is thrilled to be playing, not just to a hometown crowd, but to a “home-club.” He joined The Late Show line-up at Revolver soon after Out of Order defunct.
“I’ve had a great deal of history with Revolver over the years and so I honestly could not think of a club I’d rather be doing this in. It will be a special night. I have a lot of things to celebrate at the moment, and it seems NYE is going to be the night!
Thayer and band will be on stage at 11:00pm at Revolver on NYE. It’s sure to be a night of exceptional music and bizarre antics so get your tickets early!
