STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
Spank Rock’s breakthrough success is the stuff dreams are made of. Emerging in 2006 with their downright filthy debut album ‘YoYoYoYoYo’, the duo – made up of MC Naeem Juwan, aka Spank Rock, and producer Armani XXXchange – shot out of the Baltimore club scene and onto the worldwide stage.
Mixing elements of hip-hop, electro, booty and Miami bass, their sound is a unique one and has been championed by the likes of Diplo and Hollertronix, and after a sold out club tour of Australia midway through last year they’re returning this month for the Big Day Out and selected solo shows.
Tim Hardaker, inthemix’s National Editor, tracked down Armani XXXchange in Brooklyn, New York, and found out how they handled their sudden rise to fame, what it’s like being a US hip-hop act signed to a UK record label, and of course what they have planned for BDO audiences.
Spank Rock tour Australia on the Big Day Out in January and February:
Jan 21 – Big Day Out, Gold Coast
Jan 24 – Gaelic Club, Sydney (w/ Diplo)
Jan 25 – Big Day Out, Sydney
Jan 28 – Big Day Out, Melbourne
Jan 30 – Prince of Wales, Melbourne (w/ Diplo)
Feb 2 – Big Day Out, Adelaide
Feb 4 – Big Day Out, Perth
