STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW

Although a self confessed ‘vinyl junkie’, Mex – the producer behind the funked up hip-hop fusion outfit Black Grass – recently revealed to ITM that he was only too happy to trade in his record bag for a laptop and Rane’s rather spiffy Serato DJing system. Why? To save his back of course. However, just because he leaves the vinyl at home now doesn’t mean he’s any less of a record collector, preferring to transfer all his music from analogue to digital over downloading or using CD copies still to this day.

Having released several albums on the Cat Skills label, featuring artists as diverse as Blak Twang, Maylay Sparks and Blu Rum 13, the longtime crate digger will be returning to Australia in March for the inaugural Playground Weekender festival, as well as several solo DJ dates. ITM’s Tim Hardaker spoke with Mex recently, discussing the untimely death of James Brown (RIP), his all time favourite break beat, and what he’s got planned for his next album.

Mex of Black Grass plays Australia in March:

Sat 10 Mar – The Esplanade, Melbourne
Sun 11 Mar – Playground Weekender, Sydney
