Chinese Laundry party boy Steve Lind is the toast of Sydney. Recently playing to 30,000 at the Good Vibes festival he showed why. He comes to Perth for the first time to party with the West coasters. ITM’s SignalDrivers bails him up on the eve of his trip west.
SignalDrivers: You come highly recommended as the best party breaks DJ in Australia, how do you approach DJing?
Steve Lind: I wouldn’t say I’m strictly a breaks dj, although my sound is based around breaks and hip hop for sure. I just try to play music that I myself would love to lose it on the dance floor, weather it be pop, rock, electro, d&b or whatever. So I draw my influences from everywhere and everything that makes you feel good. I believe in the party.
SignalDrivers: How did you get started?
Steve Lind: I started out playing drums in bands around Queensland. The last band I was in was a ska group and we had like 7 members. So when that fell apart I sort of realised I could make just as much noise on my own behind the decks instead of the drum kit and I didn’t have to split my drinks rider 7 ways!
SignalDrivers: Recently you played to over 30,000 at Good Vibes in Sydney. Was it daunting? Do you have any pre DJing routine, like a boxer prepares for a fight?
Steve Lind: I thought I would be shit scared! I thought the crowd would be all like ‘Booo! where’s Snoop Dogg and Beasties? Get off you nobody!’ But they where really cool and got with it. I find a few throw downs help warm me up before a fight!
SignalDrivers: Is it true, breaks DJs get all the girls?
Steve Lind: My advise to any dj is – don’t under estimate the power of the female! If you can get all the girls in the club onto the dance floor…you’ve got it made (and it makes for a nice view from the booth too).
SignalDrivers: Which producers are doing it for Steve Lind at the moment?
Steve Lind: Bass Kleph is absolutely all over it as far as breaks go at the moment. His new label Vacation Records has been pumping out gold so far with no sign of letting up. Also Switch had a great run last year, let’s hope he keeps the head cavers coming.
SignalDrivers: Any funny/interesting stories from your time as a DJ?
Steve Lind: I promised a friend I would dj at his Indian wedding next month…I’ll get back to you.
SignalDrivers: If Paris Hilton came up to you while you were DJing and asked you to play “Put your hands up for Detroit”, would you play it?
Steve Lind: If Paris Hilton came up to me and asked me anything I’d probably wake up and go ‘what a rad dream’.
SignalDrivers: What are you looking forward to from your trip west?
Steve Lind: I’ve heard nothing but good things about the WA scene. I’m really looking forward to Destination? at Ambar…I hear Desti crew know how to throw a party! Also, the beer tastes better over there so I’ve been led to believe.
SignalDrivers: When you’re not DJing what are you doing?
Steve Lind: Recovering from the weekend. Sniffing out new tunes. Getting ready for the next party!
SignalDrivers: Great, see you in Perth!
