STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
Often referred to as the ‘Godfather of Breaks’, Rennie Pilgrem has been as the forefront of the genre since it split off from big-beat during the late 90s. Responsible for setting up the seminal UK breaks night Friction with Adam Freeland and Tayo, he’s also the head honcho of record label TCR (Thursday Club Recordings), which has released many of the breakbeat scene’s biggest records throughout the years.
Having recently issued a call to the breaks DJs and producers of the world to “bring back the beats”, he’s been in the studio of late working on his new artist album. Over the coming weeks, however, he’ll be taking some time out to undertake a tour of Australia, giving the loyal followers of the breakbeat sound a taste of his latest musical creations.
Angus Paterson of inthemix recently spoke with Rennie as he relaxed in Cornwall, getting down to the nuts and bolts of where he sees the breakbeat scene heading in the future. If Pilgrem has his way, it’s definitely not down the 4/4 path!
