DJ Food & DK have just left the country after a whirlwind visit to promote their latest ‘Solid Steel’ mix CD on Ninja Tune, leaving jaws-dropped in their wake thanks to sets chock full of technical wizardry and seemingly impossible musical juxtapositions.
DJ Food, and longtime studio and performance partner DK, have pushed the ‘mash-up’ genre since well before it was fashionable, and in that time have amassed a solid fanbase from more discerning appreciators of the genre, those who are looking for something perhaps a little more cerebral than a Britney Spears acapella over the latest indie chart hit.
Speaking with ITM’s Tim Hardaker, in a few minutes of downtime DK explains how their approach to mash-ups differs from the rest, and how painstaking a process it was to put together their brand new CD.
