STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
Sworn lover of the acid wobble, UK mainstay Lee Coombs has stayed true to the ‘catch-all’ tech-funk tag. Alongside the likes of Meat Katie, Elite Force and Dylan Rhymes, he’s been championing the bottom heavy techno-breaks-house hybrid since 1989. The DJ’s first vinyl pressing was the techno-heavy Self Indulge EP alongside Nick Annies as Invisible Men. Since then, his production output has been nothing if not prolific. Signing a covetable deal with Finger Lickin’ in 1998, Coombs went on to drop his defining album Breakfast Of Champions in 2004, followed by a slew of 12”s and remixes.
Coombs is now officially signed to tech-funk touchstone lot49, after his own Thrust Recordings was forced to fold. Since relocating to the USA, he’s found himself a regular fixture at Nevada’s Burning Man Festival, a one-of-a-kind desert rave he channeled on his last mix-CD Land Of The Monkey Snake. ITM’s Jack Tregoning got Coombs on the phone to discuss tech-funk in 2007, and how he’s taking down the tempo on his forthcoming LP.
