Returning to Australia following the success of his Caracol album last year, Frenchman Alex Kid will this time be playing at a party with a difference. In addition to a club gig in Adelaide on Friday night, his Sydney fans are in for a special treat as the Bread & Butter and Deep As Fuck crews are combining forces to hit the seas for a special harbour cruise this coming Sunday. And as the man himself says, it’s sure to turn out to be a memorable event. “Sexy music, and a good party! I’m quite excited about it. I love boat parties!”
A longtime singing of Laurent Garnier’s seminal F-Communications label, Alex Kid has honed his sound over the years to the stripped back techno and house melodies, and here he talks to ITM about what his traveling plans, what he’s been up to since the release of his Caracol and what we can expect this weekend.
Your last album Caracol came out last year: have you been working on a new album since then, or just touring hard?
I’ve been touring quite a bit and working on other projects, which means I didn’t really have much time for my own productions. Even though lately I’ve been making some music again for myself. I needed to do so. I guess quite soon I’ll release new stuff. I also started my own label with Remy Voet, a friend Graphic designer and it is named Imprime Records, and that has been a little bit time consuming.
Caracol means snail in Spanish, and speaking of snails, you’re on the road a lot with travel and hence must be acquainted with cuisines of the world: what is your favourite country for food?
France is great for food, Thailand and lebanon. Then Spain and Italy of course!
Aside from the quality of the food, where is your favourite place to play?
Germany is great, I love playing at my residency in Berlin at Weekend, Spain and England are also great.
You’ve produced many different acts in the studio, like George Michael and King Britt. Do you still produce for other acts or are you concentrating on Alexkid?
I didn’t produce for them I did remixes of their singles for them. It is not quite the same thing, but I’d definitely love to produce George Michael one day! Actually as I was saying before, I’ve been producing other projects so I didn’t have much time for my Alex Kid project.
Has your music changed at all since Caracol? What can fans expect from your next outing?
I’m getting a little bit back into house, more like house and minimal together, no vocals. Like the Cadenza stuff, or Maurizio.*
So what do you have planned for your sets in Australia? Will it be mostly your own productions?
Noooooo. I’m not that egocentric… Hahaha! I play a lot of different things, minimal and techno with a house groove. No electro…..
How did you come up with Alex Kid? Is it somehow connected to the old computer game?
It is indeed… Sega Master System.
Do you remember your first gig? Where was it?
In a flat party at friends, that’s were I did my first sets. Once it got too crazy, the guy had to stop doing the parties…
I have heard that you really like Portishead and Radiohead. What other bands do you like listening to?
Editors, Interpol, Sufjan Stevens, Goldfrapp, Scientist. I could make a huge list, but it would be much too long! I’m very open minded…
On MySpace you have profile of MDMA drug in your top10 friends. What is your relationship to party drugs?
I barely ever take anything, I’m not going to say I never did, but it is very very rare… Drugs are not important, music is… (I know, that was easy).
Any plans for NYE and Christmas?
Family time! I actually hate playing on NYE…. Unless the party is really really cool. I might go to Rio from the latest news, but nothing is confirmed…
What should people expect from you on the boat party you are playing in Sydney?
Sexy music, and a good party! I’m quite excited about it. I love boat parties!
