STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW

One of the most intriguing artists to hail from Detroit, Amp Fiddler bears no musical prejudices. While his two albums – 2004’s Waltz Of a Ghetto Fly and last year’s Afro Strut – carry the ‘neo-soul’ tag, he’s equally informed by raw funk, house, techno and hip hop.

The multi-instrumentalist was part of George Clinton’s iconic Parliament and Funkadelic groups in the ‘70s and ‘80s, before breaking out as a solo artist. Both Amp Fiddler albums were recorded in a home studio, with all aspects of production overseen by the man himself. His prodigious touch has also extended to collaborations alongside Carl Craig (on the ambitious Detroit Experiment project) and the elusive Kenny Dixon Jr aka Moodymann.

On tour, Amp Fiddler is joined by an itinerant, shape-shifting band of musicians who help bring his smoky electronic soul to life. They’re headed back to Australia for a few shows in early January, so ITM’s Jack Tregoning got the main man on the phone to find out what we can expect.

See Amp Fiddler strut his stuff at the following dates:

Monday 31st December, The Rosemount, Perth
Tuesday 1st January, The Hot Barbeque Festival, Melbourne
Saturday 5th January, The Great Northern, Byron Bay
Wednesday 9th January, Sydney Festival Beck’s Bar w/ Percee P, Sydney
