STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW

Until recently, Gregg Gillis has led a double life to rival any superhero. By day, he was a mild-mannered biochemical engineer; by night the anarchic, club-rocking Girl Talk. Gillis has now dropped the day job, making way for an action-packed 2008. His third album Night Ripper arrived on Illegal Art in 2006 to much applause. Its ‘sample-based remixes’ of top 40 hits, easy-listening standards and jump-up party anthems are far too smart to be lumped in the over-crowded ‘mash-up’ basket.

A Girl Talk live show is something to behold as well. Armed with a laptop and microphone, the lanky dude from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania transforms into an unhinged party monster. It’s not uncommon to see him spontaneously undressing mid-performance – or being undressed by his fans, as was the case on his last Australian tour. Here he speaks to ITM’s Jack Tregoning about the perils of sampling, the universality of party people and why he’s looking forward to returning to our shores this silly season.

Catch Girl Talk at the following dates…

Sunday December 30 – Falls Festival, Tasmania
Monday December 31 – Billboard the Venue, Melbourne
Monday December 31 – Falls Festival, Lorne
Tuesday January 1 – Field Day, Sydney
