‘Dance music royalty’ are words that immediately spring to mind when you mention Holland’s 16 Bit Lolitas. Made up of Peter Kriek and Ariaan Olieroock, together they’re one of the most successful production duos who have ever turned their attention to progressive and underground house. Whether it’s in the nightclubs themselves, or on the mix compilations of the superstar DJ elite like John Digweed, Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren, one thing is clear: their music moves people. It’s their fusion of rumbling club-friendly basslines with those unmistakable spine-tingling melodies, with just a dash of darkness to keep things real. In the face of the huge amount of generic dance music that’s out there, you always know when you’re listening to a 16 Bit Lolitas track.

But don’t try and tie them down, cause they’re always on the move: one of their latest releases Feel I’m Falling, with vocals from Jennifer Horne, brings a guitar-heavy vibe that’s not too dissimilar to Deep Dish’s classic crossover hit Flashdance. And they’re set expand their Australian fanbase really soon: while on previous tours, the traveling DJ of the pair Ariaan has played mostly at intimate clubs shows, this time he’s been booked to join the massively successful Good Vibrations roadshow, which is set to entertain more than 100,000 punters around the country this February.

In anticipation of the shows coming up, ITM’s Angus Paterson talks to Ariaan from the duo about the year that’s just passed, his busy DJ schedule and what musical magic we can expect from the 16 Bit Lolitas in 2008…
