STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW

Surely one of hip hop’s most dexterous lyricists, Aesop Rock has yet to release a dud album. His latest, 2007’s None Shall Pass, is one of the best. It bears all the rapper’s hallmarks: honest observations, sharp turns-of phrase, self-effacing humour and tightly-wound beats. Released on his long-time home Definitive Jux, the record was co-produced by regular collaborator Blockhead, with contributions from labelmates Rob Sonic and El-P.

The result is more organic and live-sounding than Aesop’s previous releases, but no less arresting. As indicated by his down-to-earth rhymes, this US veteran doesn’t prescribe to the bragging, circle-jerk school of rap. In his own words, he’s just a regular guy (with an irregular gift).

Heading down under for the Future Music Festival, Aesop Rock tells ITM’s Jack Tregoning why he’s so enamoured with Australia, and what we can expect when he takes the stage.

Catch Aesop Rock voicing his ‘irregular gift’ at the following Future Music Festival shows around the country…

Mar 1 – Future Music Festival, Brisbane
Mar 2 – Future Music Festival, Perth
Mar 8 – Future Music Festival, Sydney
Mar 9 – Future Music Festival, Melbourne
Mar 10 – Future Music Festival, Adelaide

And check out the clip for his latest album’s title track None Shall Pass.
