Is there anybody out there who knows house music better than Roger Sanchez? By that we’re not talking about electro house, or deep house, or minimal house or tribal… Instead, it’s the entity that is house music itself – in all its many different variations. As a DJ, producer and owner of the prolific Stealth Records imprint, one of the most frustrating things for Sanchez must be that people perceive him as a DJ that plays straightforward ‘big room’ house. But nothing could be further from the truth.
“The thing is, I don’t limit or pigeonhole myself to one sound, I think that’s dangerous. I love all forms of music and I love different types of house, so I play across the board. The thing is, the way that I craft it into my sets – it makes sense, and it takes you on a journey from one point to another.”
And he’s back in Australia right now, for a tour that’ll see him rocking both the sunny festival stages and the darkened nightclubs. ITM’s Angus Paterson talks to Roger Sanchez about his Australian tour so far, what it’s been like playing to crowds at the Future Music Festival, his partnership with Laidback Luke as well as the constantly evolving beast that is house music.
