STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
He’s one of the world’s few DMC Champions who’s equally known as a club DJ, but just when fans thought they had him tied down as a drum n’ bass selector, DJ Craze had to go and pull the rug out from under them with his FabricLive compilation. Rather than rinsing it out, it’s packed full of old-school 80s electro and upbeat Miami Bass, and people have certainly been taken by surprise. But remember, this is the man who spun people out in the first place by dropping drum n’ bass in his sets – he’s never bowed down to his fan’s expectations, and he aint about to start now.
“Yeah, I’ve had some resistance,” he laughs. “But the same thing happened when I got into drum n’ bass, when I was coming out of turntablism and started spinning Dnb. People were like, ‘What the fuck, we don’t want to hear you mixing these drum n’ bass tracks’… But it’s always switching up, and you always have new generations of kids coming in not knowing who you are anyway.”
So one thing is for sure: DJ Craze’s new FabricLive CD is a direct reflection of what he’s dropping in his sets at the moment. Fans will be able to check it out for themselves where Mr Craze returns to Australia towards the end of the month. ITM’s Angus Paterson has a chat with him about his new sound.
