STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
This year, Grant Smillie is out to surprise you. Following the pop success of his TV Rock project alongside Ivan Gough, the producer is aiming for a more “European” sound on upcoming releases. While he concedes this may lose him a few fans of the barely-legal variety, he’s set on branching out from electro-house.
The main reason for Smillie’s chat with ITM, though, is the impending release of the onelove (Sound Machine) compilation. Of the three-CD package, the Melbourne rep has handled the ‘3AM’ disc, while Italian stallions Crookers take control of ‘Backroom’ and Sydney’s Matt Nugent warms it up with ‘Midnight’. Smillie attests the deep-in-the-morning honours are a good fit for him, giving him a chance to air bombs from the likes deadmau5, Steve Angello and John Dahlback. But what exactly does he mean by ‘European’? Before jetting off to the Miami Winter Music Conference, the man shared a few thoughts with ITM’s Jack Tregoning.
OneLove (Sound Machine) is out now on onelove/Sony BMG.
