STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
There’s no denying that the term ‘electro house’ has a tendency to polarise opinion. There are those who love it, feeling it’s the most exciting thing to hit the club scene since Thomas Edison invented the turntable in 1877 (ok, so there wasn’t actually a club scene back then… opium dens maybe?) Then you’ve got the type who see it as the devil incarnate, and they’re probably busy gathering fellow believers right now for a puritan-style bonfire to burn all the electro records they can find. If you fall into the latter category, we’ve got some – probably unsurprising – news for you; you’re outnumbered.
In August last year Ministry of Sound took the wraps off their newest compilation series; ‘Electro House Sessions’, fronted by two of the rapidly growing genre’s stars, The Stafford Brothers and Tommy Trash. The album went gold, selling in excess of 35,000 copies, and now the boys are back again for the second round. Speaking with ITM about his status as a poster-boy for the electro generation, Tommy Trash was humble, but also detailed his plans for moving beyond the confines of the style.
Having remixed everyone from dance acts like Green Velvet, Armand Van Helden and Tom Novy, through to mainstream pop stars like The Veronicas and even Delta Goodrem, Tommy has now chosen to forgo the remix offers to focus on solo productions entirely. He’s got six tracks already in the can and awaiting release, and he hopes to see the steady stream of solo material continue throughout 2008, most of it sitting outside the usual ‘electro house template’ in sound. As ITM learns, it’s time for Tommy to spread his wings.
