STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
Dance music and a sense of humour don’t often go hand-in-hand. For Todd Terje, they’re inseparable. The Norwegian wunderkind is as enamoured with kitsch as he is with distinction; lending his productions a winking sense of mischief.
Raised in rural Mjøndalen, Terje had to dig deep for his musical inspiration. It was Bjørn Torske’s Sexy Disco that turned him from making house and jungle to experiments in vintage disco. He soon found himself under the tutelage of compatriot Prins Thomas, who helped break Terje to the wider world. Now the young gun is busier than ever.
In between mapping out an artist album, he continues to tailor tunes for his DJ sets: adding an intro here, tweaking a bassline there. A Todd Terje club show, then, is a one-of-a-kind ride – something that Australia is set to learn this month. Expect house, funk, space disco, the occasional whiff of fromage…and girls on the dancefloor.
Here ITM’s Jack Tregoning speaks to the man about the unifying joys of the internet and why Berlin could use another DJ.
