STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW

What do you get when you cross the inscrutable frontman of a Welsh indie-outfit with the revered underground aesthetic of a hip-hop producer ordinarily based in Los Angeles? The bombastic synthetic rock-hop-opera known as Neon Neon; a meeting of the minds between Gruff Rhys of the Super Furry Animals and Boom Bip, a regular on the Warp subsidiary label Lex Records.

The duo originally paired up when Boom Bip came onboard as the Super Furry Animals’ tour DJ. He remained in close contact with Rhys, and pretty soon they’d hatched a plot to write and record a concept album that detailed the life and times of fated car-maker John DeLorean (yes, the dude who made the flying car in Back To The Future). A concept album about flying cars with two admired musical identities who each stand atop the apex of their respective scenes… It’s kitsch beyond belief, but they’ve got the musical chops to back it up with substance as well as style. ITM speaks with Boom Bip to get the lowdown.

Neon Neon’s album Stainless Style is available now through Lex/Inertia. Check the video for their single I Lust U below:
