A number of quiet achievers have been contributing to the Sydney drum n bass scene of late, including the Lost In Jungle crew, who are staging their first jungle event of the same name this Thursday. ITM’s bekk had a quick chat to the Lost In Jungle boys about their background, their first party and the future of drum n bass in Sydney.

So, who are Lost In Jungle? Why did you guys take the leap and form a promotions team?

Lost In Jungle (L.I.J) are three friends – fRew, Mike B and Aidan, who claim to absolutely love jungle and drum n bass music. L.I.J is still very much on it’s first legs, it was pretty much formed during the few hours after Krust & Die. We came to the conclusion that there just weren’t enough jungle parties around and we thought the best way to fix that was to put one on ourselves. We wanted to create a party saturated with the cool vibe that seems to always be present at jungle parties.

What are the main musical influences on L.I.J at the moment?

The main musical influence on L.I.J has come from mainly local Sydney drum & bass parties. But I guess the producers who drive us are the bigger ones like Krust, Die, Bad Company and Roni Size – who have all played over here as well. Old skool tunes from Mickey Finn and Aphrodite also rate highly.

How do you see the drum scene in Sydney at present? Where can you see it moving in the future and how does L.I.J fit into this?

Jungle and drum n bass is definitely underground in Sydney at present, almost to the point where its too underground as there’s not heaps of parties for fans to go to. As far as we can see there’s no good reason why jungle/dnb shouldn’t be popular as there is some really quality music being produced and played and there’s room for expansion in Sydney. But as far as replacing a small community with a large, commercial scene goes that’s fully not what we’re about. We just want to throw a good party.

Who’s on the bill for the 24th?

Ritual VS Vader, Matt & Kayla, Shuey, Koda, c4 (Icecold Crew UK) and eLi as well as MC’s Antic, Mnuva and Tanzi. eLi has played at local parties for three years – mixing anything from nu-skool breaks, dub and electro but has a secret passion for jungle. c4 has been living in Australia for the last eight months and has been dj’ing for four years. He has a crate full of the UK’s finest jungle ready to unleash on Thursday night. His face might be familiar to the old silver room crew.

Why did you choose these particular DJ’s?

We chose these people because they’re pretty much the cream of local talent as well as giving a few up and comers a go as well. Anyone who has been to a jungle and drum n bass party in Sydney lately know what these guys are capable of, and anyone that doesn’t know should come and check it out.

What kind of jungle can we expect to hear?

Jungle of the extra large nature. Many of the DJ’s have claimed to have purchased extra essential vinyl just for this party. It will range from melodic and funky drum n bass, to the darker side of jungle – and everything in between.

Is there any one track you’d like to hear on Thursday night?

The jungle mix of The Fugees Ready or Not. We’d like to hear c4 play it, as he’s the only person i know who’s got it on vinyl.

Can we expect to see another L.I.J party in the future?

We guess the answer to this depends on the success of the 24th, but fingers crossed and you’ll be hearing from L.I.J again soon.

Lost In Jungle is on at The Dendy Bar, Thursday 24th January. Tickets are $10 on the door, or $8 with a flyer, kicking off at 11pm. For more information go to www.sydneyunderground.com
