For a snapshot of what’s exciting about house music in 2008, look no further than Trickski’s stellar Berlin Sessions Promo Mix on ITM-FM. Stripped-back but jackin’, it’s a Berlin-via-Detroit spellbinder. Make no mistake – Trickski is the business. The partnership of Yannick Labbe and Daniel Becker has been a prestigious one. As A&R heads of Sonar Kollektiv sub-label Members Of The Trick, they’ve shown serious smarts. The imprint’s output has thus far navigated deep house, nu-disco, techno, pop and ‘real’ electro. Eclecticism is the Trickski badge of honour. Equally comfortable with the raw funk of Move Me as they are with the light touch of Powerhouse, the duo’s own studio output is never one-note.
Every month (on a Tuesday night, no less) Trickski pack out Berlin’s Cookies Club for a journey through the many shades of house. This isn’t the place to go for “a straight night of minimal techno”; and that’s a philosophy you can apply to any Trickski DJ set. Anyone who caught Daniel and Yannick on their last Australian visit will agree they can rock a party, and look good in scarves. When ITM’s Jack Tregoning got Daniel on the phone, he was strolling the streets of Berlin in search of a coffee. It turns out he’s as pleasantly surprised as we are to be coming back to our shores so soon (although sadly this time without Yannick).
