STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
An acclaimed DJ/producer who specialises in downtempo funk, soul and hip hop tunes that occasionally flirt with dancefloor breakbeat, Brighton’s Mex AKA Black Grass has finally dropped his followup to 2006’s winning A Hundred Days In One album. And appropriately enough, he’s chosen to simply title his third full-length effort as Three. Featuring collaborations with J-Live, Baby Charles, Hearin’ Aid and more, Mex has actually compared his third LP to another famous trilogy that you probably might have heard of. “This album is my Return of the Jedi,” he says. “Whereas A Hundred Days In One was my Empire Strikes Back and was quite dark, this is more fun with couple of Ewoks thrown for laughs. Rest assured I won’t be ruining it with a load of unnecessary CGI though.” Thank god for that!
You might also know Black Grass as one of the most consistent visitors to our shores for the Australian festival season, visiting multiple times since the beginning of the decade. And in 2008 he’s still giving us the festival love, with appearances at the We Love Sounds festival around the country. ITM’s Angus Paterson talks to Black Grass about his new album and upcoming Australian tour.
