STREAMING AUDIO INTERVIEW
We’ve endured the wait torturous wait. We’ve been listening to his new album Imagine. We’ve been downloading his live sets. We’ve even been getting ourselves whipped up into a fury over mainstream media’s embarrassing attempts to piss on our parade (read about the saga involving the Sydney Morning Herald HERE). But the time is now. This weekend Armin van Buuren will finally be bringing the massive ‘Armin Only’ bonanza to Australia. While his fans at home in the Netherlands have been enjoying the epic parties for years, it’ll be the first time it’s ever been seen out his home country in all of its glory. And it’s now finally here – so giddy up people!
While trance continues to be the whipping boy of dance music in many quarters, accused of being generic, formulaic and limited in scope, one of the legendary extended DJ sets from Armin van Buuren is the sort of thing that’s able to put these criticisms to bed. After all, it takes a lot of skill to be able to hold the audience’s attention for a whopping nine hours as he does at the ‘Armin Only’ events.
“When I’m playing for such a big room, I might have to play it a little more accessible for some people,” he told ITM. “But if you mix and time it well, then people can understand those tougher records.” But as we all know, it’ll be coming with a whole other bag of tricks this time. “‘Armin Only’ started as a DJ set, and it still is a DJ set. But it comes with entertainment. Instead of the vocal coming from the CD, it’s actually being done live,” he says.
As the tour draws near, Armin van Buuren talks to ITM’s Angus Paterson about being the ‘one and only’, in part 2 of our interview with the world’s #1 DJ.
