The ‘anti-king of water conservation’ Ajax files a story from the road for inthemix. Currently on tour to support his ‘Sweat It Out Vol 1’ mix CD with Miami Horror, here the reigning Australian #1 DJ takes a trip to Melbourne institution Third Class. He drank rave juice, he hid in a cupboard and he hooked up with a cute girl (we think).
Rolling up to Third Class in Melbourne is always at treat, and tonight was no exception. The huge Sweat It Out posters lining AC DC Lane directed Act Yo Age and myself about 50 meters towards the massive queue lined up and around a parallel street. Club queues really can set the mood, and as much as the punter may hate them… I love them. They can really give me a stiffie. However, I really hate pushing in, but I guess it’s our night. So, out came the “excuse me, pardon me, wanker coming through” lines, and we were in.
It was only about 11pm but the club was already packed and heaving… oh yeah, my bubble burst and I was ready to boogie. Hours before I’m about to get on the 1s-and-2s I have the concentration span of a goldfish as I’m always thinking about the set ahead. But, at Third Class (previously the highly acclaimed Honky Tonks), it’s as if I’ve done a couple of hours of bikram yoga before I step foot in the booth. The place is like a second home and the staff are simply fuckin’ ace.
Mr Tranter from Gameboy/Gameirl was warming up with a smoochie fudge of krunk and funk. I immediately ran to the booth and humped on him, and although there were an abundance of hot boys and fresh girls in the place, he was the choice for my momentary affection. I hadn’t even started playing and already I was doing hurdles! “RAVE JUICE NOW” me soon thought… (a glowing cocktail served in sandwich bag, for those who haven’t had the delight of a trip to Third Class).
I Melbourne shuffled to the bar, much to the bewilderment of those doing the neutron dance (post Bang Gang dance), and before I knew it Tranter was on the bar with a mic in hand, shirt off, body bouncing, launching into perhaps the best Gameboy/Gamegirl set I have been witness too! Jess and Katie were on fire… more Rave Juice, more Melbourne shuffle! I can’t help but get excited on occasions such as these. The joint was jumping, and I was jumping with it – Miami Horror made sure of that. It was such a styling and up for it crowd, it was like 1989 all over again! Combine this with Thirds’ post acid club décor and it’s hard not to just throw your hands in the air.
When it was my turn, I ploughed through my set! To be honest I don’t really want to talk about it… not that it was bad… it was a bag o’ krunk-tech and grime and I was bouncing, which is the most important thing to me. I was covered head to toe in sweat and I was having a ball! Unfortunately, however, I had no change of shirt… this was going to make things difficult for me when I was finished as I had a huge crush on this girl, but didn’t want to approach her looking like I’d just stepped out of a sauna. It was made even more difficult when Act Yo Age stepped up, playing a banging b-more and classic house set. How was I ever going to dry off!
Eventually I did, after I locked myself in a cupboard for a half hour. I hovered in the area that my crush was, hoping for some contact. Then I started sweating again… no way, I am not going back in the cupboard. Maybe she felt sorry for me but she didn’t seem to mind… phew! To be continued (...in the cupboard)
